Any other Southern commuters who thing this getting beyond stupid now? IMHO all three sides are wrong on this - the unions, Southern and the DfT.

Bit of an over simplification. It's really not. It would be far better if the RMT just admitted that it's about that and stop dressing it up (aka lying) with "this strike is about safety". There are plenty of train services that are driver only. "Aslef ordering their members" Aren't they supposed to work for the members, not order them around?

Why is it acceptable for London Underground drivers to control their doors with one button from their cab and it has been that way for decades without a problem or safety issue.... yet the RMT insist that a "Guard" must perform the function on Southern Rail trains for safety reasons? Luddites.

Luddites. And the Overground, not to mention countless other rail services. The RMT challenged the move, claiming passenger safety would be compromised. Transport for London replied that at the time the East London Line, already one-man operated, has one door-related incident for every 7 million passengers, while the section of the network which currently uses conductors has one door-related incident for every 4 million passengers.
