Two who wouldn't break the bank and would be realistic and available:

LB - Nathan Ake (Chelsea, on loan at Bournemouth). He played a full season on loan at Watford last season and by all accounts played fairly well. He's been loaned to Bournemouth this season but I'm not sure why considering they have the excellent Charlie Daniels as first choice left back. Chelsea reportedly considering recalling him in January due to lack of playing time. I see this as being a perfect stopgap until Pape gets back from his injury. Loan for the rest of the season.

CDM - John Obi Mikel. He's getting absolutely no game time at Chelsea and is making noises about a move in January. He's still the captain and first choice midfielder for Nigeria (the downside is we'd lose him to AFCON). But he'd be available relatively cheaply and still has a few years at this level.

For these two we're looking at a small wage outlay on Ake (Chelsea would probably subsidise the wages and even if they didn't he's probably on no more than 30k a week and only for half a season. Chelsea would let Mikel go for a nominal transfer fee, if he's willing to take a pay-cut it's a no brainer for me.

I doubt he is but even if that's the case his next contract is going to be a lot lower.

Why do you say this? This is Chelsea and did they not pinch him from under Man Ure's noses when they thought they had signed him. Think this is a very likely wage. Don't forget China is waiting in the wings.
