There's a nasty bloke at my work who's been winding me up for some time. Always immature and knocking over piles of stock I have stacked at work etc. I've wanted to lay into him and give him a hiding for the last year or 2 that he's been here but I don't do things like that these days as I have a Mrs and a kid and rent to pay so cant afford to be losing my job. This guy bullies and upsets another couple of the guys at work too. He's been reported a couple of times but no one seems to care and he makes people's life a misery at work especially me as I'm always full of anger and wish I could do something about the without getting into trouble and losing my job. Today I find out myline manager has been promoted and I got called into the meeting room for my boss to tell me the Bully has been given the job to be my supervisor. I said it's a joke and how could someone so immature and someone who upsets people and winds them up etc be given the job and my boss just said the decision is final. He called the Bully in to the room and he acted all innocent like butter wouldn't melt in his mouth and said "there will be no trouble from me" but for weeks he has been winding me up saying "I'm going to be your boss and you ain't going to last long when I'm incharged" building up till today. When we left the room he had a smirk on his face. It's going to be hell working under him and I have so much built up anger where I want to hit him so I don't have a clue how the hell I'm going to keep calm when he's up to his usual immature shananigans. I have been going home from work depressed over the last year from all the stress he causes which has been effecting me and my finances relationship. Is there any law against promoting someone who has caused all this grief? Is there anything that can be done about it? I thought there was rules against someone being chose for a job role without anyone else being consulted who might have wanted the job themselves or at least be interviewed for it? I can't believe what a joke of a company it is here to not care and to be happy to have someone like him making people's life hell. I know nothing about this sort of thing. Is there anyone I could talk to to give advice on actions that can be taken? Edited by Palace Passion (15 Nov 2016 10.36am)

Get a hidden camera, or another colleague to film him when he's up to his mischief. Your online manager also has a responsibility to act upon complaints. If as you say, he is behaving like this with others, then you all need to get together to defeat him. Job security or not, from what you've described I would have decked the cnut long ago.... not these days as I'm old and have health issues, but I'd still stand up to him now if it were me. Sort it now..... he will only get worse sadly.

I don't think anyone else has to be consulted within the company when someone else is promoted. Never heard of this before but no idea legally whether it can be challenged. On a practical level my advice to would be to have all formal complaints about him logged. Do you belong to a union which you could contact ad they will act in the interests of their members IF he does try to get you out of the company. Legally he won't have a leg to stand on unless you do something stupid like hit him... have been in this situation myself with my own husband. Coming home ranting and raving about someone at work he can't stand and yes it was a more senior person. It can put a great strain on things. Try as best as you can to leave it at the door when you leave to go home because the repercussions domestically being that angry and brooding on it can be immense. If its really that bad I suggest you look and explore all avenues of seeking employment somewhere else where you will be happy. Why should you leave. I understand that but sometimes an easy life is better than a stressful one. I recall you asking for work on here a while back as I inboxed you. Make a list of all places and get ringing and emailing round. X

The guy I've spoke about just walked into the room smirking again. It's so hard not to lash out at someone like that. In my teenage years before having a kid I would of done it long ago. It's just so hard.

As Hoof suggests you need to try and catch him out. Speak to your fellow colleagues whom also have a problem with him, work together as a team and try and hatch plans and instances where you may be able to catch him out but try and record them as well. You mentioned him knocking over stock that you had stacked. Can you set that up between you as one event to be videoed as evidence but you will need more examples than that. However you mustn't lose your temper at any stage as that only plays into his hands.

There's a old boy that gets bullied by him and tells me he hates him etc but he would never give evidence he never wants to make a fuss. And the other guy that's been bullied by him is a guy from Africa that doesn't speak great English and he probably won't do anything either

Edited by Palace Passion (15 Nov 2016 10.36am) Bullying in the workplace is rife even within the teaching profession - little wonder that so many are leaving within their droves. Have a look at the following link that will hopefully be of assistance:

Document everything in a diary form and then make a complaint of bullying and harassment in the workplace. If they investigate it and it gets resolved, then perfect. If they don't then you should seek advice from a legal firm. Technically you could quit work and then make a claim against the employer for constructive dismissal citing bullying and harassment as a reason. The diary will effectively be your evidence. What kind of contract do you have? Are you a permanent member of staff? Obviously keep looking for alternative employment in the mean time.

I worked with a guy that really got my back up and was a complete arse to everyone. I thought the best course of action was revenge. We shared a fridge at work and his lunch was often tampered with, amazing how many times he would go to the toilet after eating his lunch. I put grated cannabis in his coffee jar, i made it a mission to get him as much as i could and i actually enjoyed going to work again and watching him. Have to say in the end i told him what i had been doing to him as the fun run out after a few months. I ended up clumping him and got sacked. Best thing that ever happened to me as i walked into a job that has given me a great career.

Just a question but surely a positive reference from the 'previous employer' is key to next job. Against the former background, what chances of a positive reference would there be?
