Our defence is the problem for sure. We have let goals in badly for most of this season due to the back four making mistakes. I don't believe Tomkins and Dann are a good pairing. Dann is the better of the two and should be playing alongside Delaney. That's until we get a decent centre back to play alongside Dann. Perhaps we should put Tomkins at right back for a few games with Ward at left back. However a new centre and left back is urgently required in the next window. Until then we will struggle with our current defenders. It's no good playing well going forward as we have done in our last two and a half matches and shipping eight goals. Delaney and Dann need to stay as our main pairing in the middle but I do realise Delaney is coming to the end of a great Palace time - One of our best servants in recent times.

Meant to put this in the Tomkins thread - Sorry! :-)

Tomkins & Dann are two good defenders, but both a bit slow and need a few games together. Hopefully that will make us more solid than yesterdays's horror show...

survival should not be the expectation for a team Pardew's spent 90 odd mill on (including a striker who is perfect for us but is looking isolated every week).

Bexley Dave Can you hear the Brighton sing? I can't hear a ******* thing! "The most arrogant, obnoxious bunch of deluded little sun tanned, loafer wearing mummy's boys I've ever had the misfortune of having to listen to" (Burnley forum) |

That would be the '' horror show '' against the best Liverpool team I've seen in years, would it ? In which we were still very much in the game until their 4th goal ? The only real criticism I have is the defending for the goals they scored from set pieces.

Well, but that sum is abated by sales, of course. We only have one player in the £30m class although a couple of others look like good value and Mandanda came on a free. I think we need a step up in quality in a couple of other departments, especially creative.

Good points, part of the problem, but for me it must be our prematch systems. I have little doubt that we have really good players now, and plenty of them, that are simply not getting the best out of them. I don't have a clue what or who it is, but I can see it most games in our poor performances. It seems to me that the players themselves are sorting themselves out to play better - not their coaching staff. When we start trying to analyse bits and pieces of individual games I think we are on the wrong track. Defenders will come under scrutiny for goals conceded, but what if they are put under unreasonable pressure by poor performances in other positions? It's a bit much to keep defending wave after wave of quality attacks. Our few games before the break we were playing possession in the midfield and scoring at will, but that happened only after a very poor first few games. I blamed Pardew, but maybe it's not him, or just him. Maybe it's the very likeable Millen? Too soft? AP too soft? I don't know, but for me the issues are at the prematch stage.
