More importantly, is the same linesman part of his "team"? The one who gave the penalty as he ran the line in front of 3000 baying scousers.

I said at the time that pigs would have flown before Benteke would have been given that pen if he'd been wearing a Palace shirt. He would have been booked instead. Willo will need to have his indignant pants on right up to his ti^H^H ears for this one.

Mariner had no intention of giving the Benteke penalty until the lino with bionic eyes,and was much further away from the incident, stuck his oar in.

We really don't know about the communication between referee and assistant that night and what was in the minds of both of them. Can only speculate that Marriner felt that his assistant was in a better position given that he was on the near touchline not far from the incident and sought advice.
