Was chatting to a friend who supports another club and got into a 'who was your first black player' conversation.

Without Google - who do you think was the first black player for Palace? In this context 'black' includes someone of mixed heritage. I'm interested to see if you come up with the same (wrong) name I did.

I'm afraid the best I could do was Vince Hilaire, not very good I know. I'd be very interested to hear more about Tony Collins, especially what the man himself had to say (if he wasn't the first, did he say who was?!). Did he experience much racism? I remember the dreadful treatment Clyde Best used to get when he played for West Ham.

I see there's actually a book about him which I'm tempted to get.

Very good. Just to add a topical note (if that's allowed in a nostalgia forum) I distinctly remember Tommy scoring with a free kick under a wall that jumped.

Sorry, I meant to quote chris123.

I have watched league football at the Palace since the first post ww11 season and Tony Collins was the first black. player that I ever watched.

I have an idea that we signed him from Rochdale but am open to correction on that.

No, he left us for Rochdale, whom he also managed for a few years.

Tony Collins joined Palace from Watford in November 1957. He was at Watford for only 3 or 4 months as in May 1957 he played for Torquay at Selhurst, as shown below, challenging Vic Rouse. Jack Edwards is our defender.

He left us in the summer of 1959 and joined Rochdale.

After that he had a long and successful career as a coach and was manager of Rochdale for 7 years from 1960 to 67 (becoming known as the "first black football manager" and also briefly at Bristol City in about 1980. I believe he worked at Man Utd as a scout for many years after that.

I think he would be regarded as our first black player, joining in Nov 1957, but I could be wrong if there was another before him.
