After Benteke, Berahino, Bony we move on to the letter C right?

Pros:
Still looks good. He just carried the US national team to a semi-final placing at the Copa Centenario Tournament (North and South America equivalent of the Euro). They lost in the semi's to Messi and friends, oh well. The US team had 7 goals and 5 assists total, Dempsey had 3 goals and 3 assists.

He's in the last year of his contract and we clearly have money to spare somehow (unless he extended his contract and I'm unaware of this). Plus he played at fulham for a few years.

Marketing, he's the only recognizable face of USA soccer now that Tim Howard is basically retired. I'm guessing the trip to the US this summer to play MLS teams was to increase fans, this signing would do that much better.

He's clearly an upgrade on frazier campbell.

As an American soccer fan,

no. I'd rather have Campbell

The major flaw in your suggestion is that Dempsey doesn't begin with a C.

Probably more useful than Doyle but not quite as good as Campbell.

Dempsey incidentally is terrible this year, looks to have lost half a yard of pace. Only scored 5 goals this year in the MLS.

Or to look at it another way, he is 33 !

Benteke = 25, Berahino = 22, Sakho = 26

Weird leap there from 3 in their prime and currently good in the Prem to one who was ok in the Prem about 4 or more years ago and now at the end of his career ?!?

I'd rather play a 4-6-0 formation than Campbell or Dempsey...

That said, I also thought that Sunderland signing Defoe was a terrible move...
