Blimey... that'll set back their attempts to join the EU.

We had a veto anyway, so it was a mindless lie to begin with that they could become part of the EU.

Edited by blackpalacefan (15 Jul 2016 9.39pm) Not to mention that France and Austria have already stated that they would put it to referendum, which would almost definitely result in a veto.

Why would we veto Turkey? Because it's an unstable country, as proved by this. In any case, there are 27 other countries. If one decides it's not getting in then it isn't. Just as if one decides that they don't like our attitude they can also partially shape our future. Now back on topic to the coup.

This thread was started with a stupid joke about EU membership so we are on topic. It is unlikely that Turkey would apply for membership unless it was fairly sure it would be accepted. There are many reasons why a European Turkey would be useful to the West.
