Got chatting to an old boy millwall geezer in the pub yesterday, was involved in the playing side back in big mals era.

He claimed to have witnessed Johnnie putting Mal on his ar$e with a right hander after he came in ranting and raving in the dressing room.

Big mal was a bully and control freak by all accounts.

Can well believe it but Big Mal put Palace on the football map big time and drew huge crowds and he seemed like a great bloke. He wasn't succesful with us but those times were fantastic and full of great memories.

Just checked out Jacksons profile on the HOl- blimey 9.4 out of ten- highly regarded then!

Don't know that much about him, my earliest gk memories are 'Budgie' and George Wood.

But that rating would suggest that Jacko is top of the tree when it comes to there pantheon of Palace GK great.

Big lump too according to Millwall old boy.

I think Mal dropped Jackson fairly quickly and put Paul Hammond in goal. Half our team then seemed to sign and do rather well for Orient.

Given the defence in front of him, and the calibre of opposition, I still think ' Jacko ' was our best ever 'keeper.

I'm not sure why Mal dropped him so quickly unless it was to prove a point that he was changing the club and wanted ' his ' players.

To be fair, I thought Hammond looked pretty good after a shaky start. But then he fell for an American girl and buggered off to Florida !

Neillo,I found that out from Tony Burns.
Hammond was rubbish to start with, but as soon as he got fairly good left.
£25K i think.?

Yes, he joined Tampa Bay ;

The Rowdies were created in 1974 and began play in 1975. The new owners hired Eddie Firmani, an assistant with Palace, as the team’s first head coach. Firmani brought over three Palace players, Stewart Jump, Mark Lindsay and Hammond for the 1975 season. Amazingly, the Rowdies won the league championship that season, with Hammond recording clean sheets in all three playoff games.

I thought Lindsay was a cracking player too....

Damn good run of keepers we had back then. Often wondered why Paul Hammond went states-side. Only caught Stonewall a couple of times but my elder brother thought the world of him (and Budgie Byrne)

Before you criticise someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticise them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

John Jackson left us to sign for L.Orient who I think were managed by George Petchey at the time. Petchey was a player for us in the 60s.

John Jackson was by far the best goalkeeper I ever saw play for Palace and that's despite many decent keepers since.

I echo that, superb keeper and in front of Martyn and Speroni as my all time greats for keepers in my time for watching live football. Remember Banks applauding Jacko for a save made during a Stoke match at Selhurst.
