I heard Pardew say after the Southampton win that he thinks a couple more players would make us into a top 4 team - or words to that effect - suggesting two quality signings are aimed at. Who? What do we need? ME: I think back-up for Souare and CW.

To maintain 6th in the premier is a big ask with only Wickham up front our strength apart from that is good with cover for injuries so I think poor planning but dont make it worse blowing millions if they seem too good to be true they are!

Looking at the team: GK: Hennessey/ McCarthy Sell: Speroni CM Cabaye/ Jedinak RW Zaha/ Lee Chung-yong CAM Puncheon/Mutch ST Wickham/ Chamakh (End loan deal Bamford) (Keep as back up or sell Campbell) (Sell Gayle, I like him but he dosen’t fit into the way we play) Look at getting in another big ST incase of injuries.

I've been very impressed with 18yr old Charlton striker 'Ademola Lookman' who has just broken into the side.Definitely one who has the potential to play for a top club.Perhaps buy him and loan him back.One for the future.

It has oft been said on this site that we have the strongest squad we have ever had. However, look at the competition. We still look relatively light. It's why we are predicted to end up a few places lower than we are rather than progress upwards. I know, stay lucky with injuries and who knows? However, reality says continue to build. Then again, the January window is rubbish. So, I agree your assessment but think we should buy no-one. Loans of one experienced striker and one CB should provide the comfort we seek. Ward can shift to the left with Kelly filling for him if Souare cops it. By the time the summer comes, we will know how much we have to spend and have the cache of [hopefully] where we have finished and can then play in the sun in a far more expansive market.

Don't entirely agree. Why would you sell Speroni? Unless he asks to go elsewhere, why not keep him at the club? He's an invaluable squad member, is probably transitioning to a coaching role, is great to have around our young keepers and would have little value in the transfer market at his age. Additionally, with a local business I'd be surprised if he wanted to leave. Why would you sell Mariappa now? Agreed by the start of next season we do need a third quality centre back to push on but Mariappa is perfectly good cover behind Delaney, Dann and Hangeland for the time being on top of which he can also cover full back. It'd be hard to improve on him for his present role (utility 4th defender) and his presence also means we don't have to replace Fryers as with Mariappa and Kelly, we have at least adequate cover across the back line. The only place I would even consider improving in January is striker and even then, only if we can get a proven commodity. In a perfect world, I would upgrade Gayle and Campbell and let Bamford go back to Chelsea. It just hasn't worked out for him. In their place I would bring Anderson into the squad (if fit) and try to sign a quality striker to challenge Wickham. That, for me, is the only signing we really need. If we could do that and retain the players we have now, I'd be well happy.
