Tux you're such a little Earther Of course its an incredible achievement, sending a probe off into space then 4.5 billion miles & 9 years later it finally arrives just off the surface & sends back high definition images of a new & strange world which until recently all we had was a blurry image from the Hubble telescope. We are the first humans to be able to see the surface of Pluto, its amazing & inspiring, the collective knowledge of the Human race has yet again been furthered by science, of course it is an amazing achievement by the human race. What we have learned from this fly by so far One of Pluto's moons Hydra is made of mostly water ice which makes it quite an interesting target for future space missions What we have learned of another of Pluto's moons Charon is just as exciting as Pluto, I wasnt expecting images of charon to be so clear & the scientists have been humerously calling the North pole of Charon ''Mordor''. Charon appears geologically active, there are large parts of the surface which are smooth, now considering that charon & pluto have been bombarded by debris for billions of years a smooth surface quite rightly indicates a heated core. This is important because it shows that planets hold their hot cores from their formation far longer than we ever expected. Pluto also demonstrates a very smooth surface indicating again a geologically active planet to go a little further these are the first two planetary bodies to have active cores or at least recently (within the last 10 million years) that dont need tidal pulling to be active. Pluto has 11,000ft tall Water Ice mountains. A really nice touch is the heart on pluto which is actually frost is going to be named Tombaugh Reggio after Clyde Tombaugh the man who discovered pluto in 1930. The Kuiper belt is clearly a fascinating place. Ouzodan is a happy astronomer tonight. The mountains are calling & I must go.

Of course its an incredible achievement, sending a probe off into space then 4.5 billion miles & 9 years later it finally arrives just off the surface & sends back high definition images of a new & strange world which until recently all we had was a blurry image from the Hubble telescope.

We are the first humans to be able to see the surface of Pluto, its amazing & inspiring, the collective knowledge of the Human race has yet again been furthered by science, of course it is an amazing achievement by the human race.

It's a decent achievement but nothing more imho.
Maths/Engineering. The mathematics have been around for centuries and the engineering is 'relatively' simple due to the inert nature of space.

Still nice to see the pics though and i'm glad you're a happy astronomer tonight

Not sure I can agree with Tux that space (isn't it actually space/time?) is inert, what with big crazy rocks hurtling into the earth millions of years ago wiping out the Flintstones et al then allowing us to pop (time [is] a relative dimension in space) into existence. Apparently more stuff to be released on Friday. Taking the bungy jump since 1964. Never to see John Jackson in a shirt again Sorry to see Lee Hills go, did we ever see Alex Marrow? Not sure I can agree with Tux that space (isn't it actually space/time?) is inert, what with big crazy rocks hurtling into the earth millions of years ago wiping out the Flintstones et al then allowing us to pop (time [is] a relative dimension in space) into existence.
