Seemed like it could even be a boost to the music industry but potentially not if it's watered down with non-music articles.

Always worthless, never readable. Hopefully the end will be soon.

For those of a certain vintage, it took on almost biblical proportions. Morley, Penman, CSM, Parsons, Burchill, etc. etc. were formative influences for me (as a writer). Even now I buy it from time-to-time as, even though its unrecognizable, it's never entirely lost its resonance as a sort of icon.

Good move, if inevitable.

Yes I used to look forward to Thursdays when this came out & to a lesser degree The Melody Maker. I also used to buy The Face (is that still going?)& probably have the first few copies somewhere in a suitcase in the loft....

Pretty sure The Face folded about five years ago. That was an NME spin off; the original editor and editorial team were mostly ex-NME journos.

Indeed, and for me the slightly earlier era of NK, CSM, Ian MacDonald etc

Could be a good move going free a la Village Voice and LA Weekly in the USA,though those also have a lot of general and listings stuff as well as music-related and are aimed at a wider age range.

Late 70s I used to love NME and occasionally get Sounds. I love technology but the anticipation of a particular interview is something I miss. Everything is so bloody instant.

I'd forgotten about Melody Maker, God I feel old sometimes.

... or priceless.

Man is the most insane species. He worships an invisible God and destroys a visible Nature. Unaware that this Nature he’s destroying is this God he’s worshipping.

I picked up a copy of Nick Kent's The Dark Stuff (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dark-Stuff-Selected-Writings-1972-1993/dp/057123271X/ref=sr_1_1?s=instant-video&ie=UTF8&qid=1436244646&sr=8-1&keywords=nick+kent) for about 5p at a local market last year. Well worth reading.

Always preferred Melody Maker truth be told, and then Uncut magazine. Now I just shout at kids 'turn that bloody racket down, call that music'

Never saw the point of these pretentious music rags telling me and others who was cool and who to listen to.

I just used my ears and got about London to hear bands and make my own mind up.
