He was indeed Steed in both the avengers and the new avengers.

I used to look after his horse 1966 at Westerham riding school, Big grey called Iron Duke, really nice man.He took me to the boot of his jag it was cramed with booz gave me a bottle whiskey , I was only 15 ,never had a hang over like it since.

Sad news.

The Avengers was very much an iconic bit of 60's British culture. It was nonsense, but still conjurers up the 60's even now.
The New Avengers, by contrast, was dreadful but I fancied Joanna Lumley when I was about 12 so I didn't mind.
