Hopefully some of the many dog owners on HOL can assist.
We've had some bad news from vets today.
pooch (jackrussell) has had a growth removed from hind leg, few days ago.
Vet has said today its a tumour and couldn't remove all as too far into her.
Obviously its not good, but I'm very inexperienced with pets(she's first dog I've had since I was at school)
I expect some on here have had similar with their dogs, so could you give me a bit of info.
Mainly talking time here,as mrs KD is pretty upset & I'd like to know whats what.
thanks
KD

Sadly these things happen bud.
From my experience (horses, dogs, cats) trust the vet and make things as nice as possible for 'pooch' (i'm sure that's a given).
It's a tough time and I don't envy you.

Unless the leg can be removed and that gets all of it there's only one likely outcome...either weeks or months you will have to choose when to put the dog down. The vet should know though. If the dog is struggling do it earlier rather than later as it can be a very painful and stressful all round if it's left too long. In meantime take it out and treat it as normal. That way they will carry on as normal wich is when they are happiest.

PS I think you should alway be there at the end for the dog...but that's a personal opinion.

Firstly, I'm really sorry to hear that. The only downside about having pets is that they're not in our lives long enough, and it bloody hurts when they go.

Our dog had an inoperable brain tumour and, selfishly, tried to keep her going for as long as possible on a cocktail of drugs. She would push her head against wall corners to try and relieve the pain - knew what had to be done then

I suppose each case is different, but I think you'll know when it's time.

All the best.

Sorry to hear that, as already mentioned depends how far the tumour is in.
How old is your dog ?
And how bothered is he/she about it ?
Maybe the leg could be removed, it s not ideal but a lot of dogs survive and cope a lot better than we would without a limb. But be advised by your vet, but at the end of the day it will be your decision.

and it's goodnight from me.......

One of the hardest decisions ever, is making that decision when the time is right. But, the more it hurts, the more it means. Make sure of course in the meantime to make every minute count and provide treats and spoils and fusses.

And don't spare you self the pain of being there, with them right at the end. In the long run you'll feel better about being their holding their paw, comforting them as they go. I know I did.

..had my beautiful 10 year old Fox Terrier called Biggles put to sleep on the 2nd of May and it was unbearably painful, she had Kidney failure and we had no idea as she showed no signs...although I do recall saying a few weeks before that she was lighter to pick up, but that was all, she was my everyday working partner and I feel utterly lost without her.

Lost her mum also only 10 to Cancer 2 years ago, so I can tell you you will know when to have her put to sleep because they will eventually stop doing anything and just hide! ..she was noticeably not right for about 2 weeks but not enough to get the vets involved, it was Wimbledon tennis time and the last Friday of it when she finally went to the vets, it was a shock to hear that she had Cancer internally everywhere, we took her home for the weekend to spoil her as the vets said she should be Ok and to bring her back on Monday, Murray won Wimbledon on Sunday and I could not obviously enjoy it!! and she spent the whole weekend hiding! dogs will not show that they are ill until they are really really ill, as they will lose their status in the pack if they show it!
It will help you to be there when they go, so you really must. You have my absolute full sympathy.

..where exactly is the growth in the hind leg? sounds like it's going into her body now and that's why he cannot remove all of it...Cancers are a nasty mixture of speeds and spreads, so there is no real way to say exactly how long it will be for pooch, the vet will know more though, through the results of the biopsy of the tumor.

So sorry to hear about your dog...but keep a positive attitude-My american bulldog "Biki",had several large tumors appear on het stomach and legs when she was nine years old. The vet said she was too old to operate on and that I should expect her to only last a few months at most..She is still going three years later and as long as she has no pain I would not dream of having her put to sleep...Give Pooch as much love as possible and treasure every moment together, and hopfully he will be around for a long time yet.

Touch my coffee and I will slap you so hard even Google won't be able to find you.
