Anyone see the documentary on what is the greatest Jazz label in the world. i remember buying Bluetrain by the great John Coltrane over twenty years ago and was blown away by this album. People like Grant Green,Lou Donaldson,Art Blakey,Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter were giants of this brilliant label. The documentary was bb4,think you can still watch it on catch up.

Blakey was a genius,there are other great drummers such as Philly joe jones,Art Taylor,Max Roach and Kenny Clarke. but Blakey is my favourite.

I watched most of the programme and have quite a good collection of Jazz including a fair number of mono recordings by Clifford Brown-Max Roach and other greats from the past.Blue note was a great label. Roach was a great drummer. It is much better to listen to mono recordings with a mono cartridge, better than playing through a stereo system.

Horace Silver and Grant Green and of course John Coltrane are my hero's. Alfred Lion and Francis Wolf are geniuses. they left us with a legacy that will never die

Art lakey and jimmy Smith are also hero's, albums like the big beat and night in Tunisia by Blakey are classics. as are albums like the Sermon and Back to Chicken Shack by the great Jimmy Smith. Some of the art work and pictures on the album covers are awesome to. By the way if you don't have it there is a very good book on Bud powell which i bought a few years ago and also Horace Silvers autobiography is very good also.

Might well look up the Silver book. Went to Paris in the '60s hoping to hear Bud Powell, Dexter Gordon or any other American musicians who were playing there but without success. Happy memories of bygone days but we still have the Blue Note recordings thanks to two men.

Yes,thanks for this black eagle.Hope its on "catch up" "Go" by Dexter Gordon! and in their early days they also recorded some good stuff by "traditionalists" like Sidney Bechet and George Lewis

Dexter could really play as could Wayne shorter. i think drummer Kenny Clarke and trumpeter the late Donald Byrd lived in Paris for a while. in fact i think Clarke emmigrated to paris. you will love Silvers book,he is my fav piano player followed by Bobby Timmons and a few others.

it's still on catch up but only for a few more hours.
