So the Tories are planning a new round of union reform to stop the public services striking. Talk about kicking a dead horse. I take it this is a prelude to further public service cuts. Still, I suppose it will get a cheer at the Tory party conference and that is the main thing. Oh, but they will be introducing a British Bill of Rights. No inconsistency there then.

Unions have proposed an electronic ballot system, but have been told they can't.

Always make me laugh the tories. they want unions to have over 40% vote in favour of strike with over 50% turnout , yet they govern with just 26% of the eligible voters , why don't they just admit that they don't want any workers to have rights, esp public sector workers , who they view as scum , despite them being public sector workers themselves! hypocrites , always biting the hand that feeds

Regularly f*cking over as many people as they can to pressure the bosses into giving you more money. Great way to get the general public onside. Your average German just loves a train driver nowadays.

Surely the entire point of a strike is to demonstrate worker dissatisfaction and to encourage a change in working conditions? Therefore, surely that cause only has some weight when at least 4/10 actually agree that there should be some change? Otherwise, what's for the employer to say it's an insignificant amount and hardly budge?

In this age of 'zero hour contracts', minimum wage (that affect far more people) that do absolutely nothing but BENEFIT THE BOSS, i'm glad there are still a small few that do have some muscle whether I always agree with their stance or not. If only half of the members can be bothered to vote and then only 80% of them agree with the strike, there cannot be strong enough feeling among the workers about the dispute and they don't therefore have a mandate to strike? I don't see the link with election turn outs either, seems like just a lazy, tenuous comparison. You're trying to compare angst among a small group of workers who would, you would think, be United in their dispute against general apathy towards politics and democracy of which parties have little or no control over Edited by Pussay Patrol (14 May 2015 9.38pm)

I think it is fair to say that a major change to industrial relations should require a significant mandate. But moreover it isn't a spurious comparison to say that people saying a higher threshold should be required do look very hypocritical when they themselves have been given significantly more power on the basis of a much much smaller threshold.
