I think we will be hearing more about this from now on. The link shows the result of the election under PR. Notice absence of SNP.

It is difficult to defend a system whereby the combined vote of UKIP and the Greens was around 5m votes - number of seats 2. SNP get 1.5 million votes, number of seats 56.

The PR result suggest to me that there would always be a coalition of either the right or left and that nationalists would squeezed. It would cut the ground from under nationalist claims that they are under constant English rule because the non-nat votes would be more relevant.
thoughts?

Under PR the results of the SNP wouldn't be covered, as that would be a Scottish election. Its unlikely that any Proportional System would cover seats in all parts of the UK, rather it would be the constituent countries (NI, Scotland, Wales and England) - Probably with the same number of seats.

Otherwise, the DUP, SDLP, Sinn Fein and UUP, as well as the SNP, would vanish.

The consequence of the UUP, DUP and Sinn Fein would likely result in a return of the UVF, UDA and PIRA campaigns.

Likewise Plydd Cymru would be back to burning holiday homes.

So likely as not, under PR the SNP would have got more or less the same result.

Guardian didn't bother running that one then as Tories would've won anyway.

How so?

They got 50% of the vote and 95% of the seats.

Optimistic as ever

Yep I worked that out earlier on another thread - a far more fair sharing of the national vote and a way to make every vote count.

We certainly need a more representative system. The Tories having complete control is just bonkers.

It is farcical that the SNP have 56 seats in Westminster when they polled not many more than the Greens.
It is bad enough that we have Scottish MP's Parliament but they are not representative of Britain and should not have 56 votes. UKIP and the Greens have a far better claim on a parliamentary voice of that magnitude and it is hardly surprising therefore that there is such a groundswell of disaffected people who feel they are being ignored.

I voted Ukip but I can't bring myself to argue against FPTP.

It's the only system that actually gets things done.....A system where you can truly judge a party because they have had their agenda unrestrained by their opponents.

Proportional representation is fairer and more democratic......But it's also a lousy form of government.

PR will not be an issue until at least 2999, and I do mean that. The form of PR in Scotland was actually designed to keep the SNP out, and that didn't work...

The Tories are not going to bring it in after winning, and almost certainly the next lot wont either... repeat ad nauseum.

I suspect Gaia will have reset the Earth and gotten rid of us pesky humans long before PR gets introduced into Parliament.

Unfortunately, I think the opportunity to change was missed by the Lib Dems when they formed the coalition government with the Tories. Why on earth they made so little of it when they were in a position of power escapes me.
