Went there for the first time yesterday since the £40 million makeover. What was probably the best museum in London is now shockingly piss poor. They've turned it into a glorified art exhibition. Gone is the great sunlit atrium full of great hardware (Jagdpanther tank, P-51, WWI era double decker, etc) to be replaced by a news corp 4x4 with a bit of damage and a burnt out Iraqi car...The whole place is dingy, dark, full of dead ends and poorly designed.

What's worse, the fantastic basement with the WWI and WWII exhibits is completely gone. Gone is the House, the Blitz experience, the trench...all replaced with a shockingly random collection of stuff, strewn around two floors with little purpose or coherence. The focal point seems to be the two s***ty shops. The whole thing has become a miserable example of what happens when you let 'consultants' and architects loose on what should be left to the historian.

The IWM used to be an absolute institution in which I would happily spend hours. It is now a f***ing awful, dumbed down and 'modernised' pile of crap.

Whoever is responsible should be stuffed head first down the naval guns outside.

Anyone else equally devastated by what they've done to this place?

I haven't been since my sons were young back in the 90's but I used to love the place.

I don't think you are alone in your views though [Link]

I am shocked to read this. I knew a refurbishment was going on but had no idea that this was the result.

Totally agree. Went just after it re-opened and was very dissapointed. The whole thing is totally dis-jointed. When you want to read about any exhibit you are looking at you have to look around for a board with group information about different things that is a little way from the exhibit itself. My daughter got completely bored and she's normally fascinated with this stuff.

A five year old child could do this! Somebody fetch me a five year old child.

Excellent. Had been really looking forward to visiting the Imperial after so long and felt totally deflated reading the OP. Thanks.

My mum took my neice and nephew along a couple of days back (11 and 9 respectively) and both thoroughly enjoyed having no interest in history or war at all

They disjointed experience and nowhere near as good a when I was a kid.

My son found the WW1 piece interesting as he had done it but it is for young kids,to full of interactive s*** for me.

The MI5/6/SOE was good but mostly due to the guys just in front of us having been in the "firm". One was horrified to see his secret encrypted radio kit from 70s on show.

The problem was, the IWM was the real deal. Downstairs was 3 times the size of the Army museum and had far more stuff...and its all gone!

£40 million down the drain and a fantastic museum ruined.

I say this with a heavy heart Kerm but save yourself the trouble - if you remember what it used to be like you will be devastated by what its been turned into. Have a day out in RAF Hendon (excellent if you are into planes), IWM Duxford or the Army museum in Chelsea which is ok, but which used to be the poor relation of the IWM.

I totally agree I was excited when I heard they were revamping, I went soon after they reopened and queued up for ages to get in. I was so disappointed. They have taken so much of what was good out. There ww2 exhibits used to be so good.

Yeah. Gonna take the kids to the Chelsea one now. I'll leave out the Imperial as I don't want to tarnish my fantastic memories of the old version. Thanks for the heads up.
