The Pagans were on to something there, these Abrahamic faiths seem to have a big problem with joy, sex and self expression.

On the contrary Jamie, you will find enormous growth in the churches that have taken the message back to the simple truth of Jesus.

As Chris Moyles said after viewing a clip of worship in a church" Whether you believe it or not they are certainly a very happy lot"

Hmmmm simple truth, is that the bit about a talking snake ? the water into wine ? the fish and bread trick? or just the small matter of raising the dead ?

Sorry mate Jesus may well have exsisted, but the rest of it is cobblers as proven by science.

Depends very much where you are looking at it from Dan, if you believe that Jesus was God in human form then nothing is disproved. If he was a simply a man, then of course, in which case I will find something better to do with my Sundays.

But until I change my mind on that, I will continue to focus on his message of Love, Compassion and Forgiveness.

Sounds ok even to sceptic right?

I think you're right as well, that the growth in modern Christianity has been away from stuffy orthodoxy and dogmatic faiths, and towards spiritually driven movements.

I quite like the whole gospel joy happy clapping Christian faiths, because they enhance the experience of existence, rather than denigrate it. I don't personally believe, but I like seeing happy people who generally have a positive, live and let live attitude.

I like the idea of God and Jesus and all that stuff of course, who wouldn't, but my adult brain thinks,,,no actually, it knows, that the bible is full of absolute dog toffee that has been proven beyond any doubt to be bollicks. Espeically the old testament crap, Adam and Eve Noah and all that old tosh.

We wouldn't say Plato was important because he was the student of Socrates, but that the philosophy of Plato that renders him important in history.

Indeed, the Socrates that Plato presents in his writings, isn't 'the real Socrates', but Plato's projection of the philosopher (ie not real at all). It has no impact on the value of Plato's teachings.

Same rules apply to Jesus and the New Testament. There's a lot of good stuff in there, that irrespective of whether god exists or not, is valuable.

Its a shame that many religions related to 'Christ' try to spend most of their time finding ways around that.
