The Evening Standard reported yesterday that the population of London reached an all-time high of 8.615 million people with the birth of Ben Karkaxhiu in St Thomas' hospital on Saturday morning. Ben's mother, Kelly Davies, who came to London from Cornwall, says that she "has no concerns about bringing Ben up in London". The previous population record was reached in 1939. In the post-war years the number of people in London fell quite dramatically until a low point of 6.7m was recorded in 1981, and remained at this level throughout the 80s. Subsequently, numbers gradually recovered to the present level, and this is projected to rise to around 11m by 2050. Does this indicate the enduring popularity and vibrancy of the capital, is growth in numbers sustainable, will it contribute to the wealth of the country as a whole or cause the sort of problems that will lead to the decline of London's status as one of the best cities in Europe?

Can you imagine the first Tit Monday of 2050? London will be so tightly packed people will be forced to brush past massive pairs of knockers on The Strand. And it works the other way too as men's pants will get accidentally stroked in the melee.

The last peak was just before the 2nd World War in 1939. Looks like we're due another war to thin things out a bit. Or a plague, of course.
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

It'll push house prices continually upwards and those in the 'margins' such as Orpington etc At the moment sattelite towns on the edges are becoming ghettos, Croydon fast becoming, if not already one. All the influx of immigrants are mainly doing the low paid jobs so all the lower class immigrants cluster there. I heard about a shanty town being built in Edmonton, how long before this spreads and you have Favela style living in all the rural areas?
