What a bloody stitch up!!

As of 1 Dec the new toll system has come into effect.

Not only is it bloody complicated and unnecessary aggro to have to pre-book the toll online but its now £2.50 each way to pay for an automated system, which by nature should surely reduce costs?

Not to mention the bridge has long been repaid it's a joke the motorist is being raped and pillaged yet again.

The scheme is a set up to fine unsuspecting drivers £100 if they forget. How are the elderly supposed to go online to pay it? What about foreign vehicles- are they going to pay? Will it encourage people to use mobiles whilst driving to pay? Will it even reduce queues as claimed?

Just a rouse to me unless anyone can convince me otherwise.

Beggars belief really.

When I worked in Ireland, it would take over an hour and a half to get from the airport to south Dublin in rush hour.

They have now removed the toll booths and it takes 30 minutes

You don't have to pay in advance but, like the congestion charge, the scheme is designed to make alot of money through fines with the onus being on you to remember that you have been through an invisible barrier.

They've had to do it because the tolls can longer automatically calculate coins by weight, as the new coins are lighter than previously. I've had to put in extra coins on numerous occassions despite paying the exact amount initially.

It will reduce the queues either side significantly though.

From what I've read, foreign drivers will be exempt. We were promised that when the bridge was paid for, the tolls would go - that didn't happen! Instead they just keep going up. Now they're saying the money will go towards road maintenance. Let's face it - it's just another tax that will go to the Treasury.

Interestingly, to compare with the Humber Bridge toll - that used to be about £3.50 but they reduced the price a year or two ago to £1.70.

PS: I will in future use the Blackwall Tunnel, although they are talking about putting a toll on that too. How are we meant to get to the rich, fertile lands of the North and Scotland?

Foreign drivers/vehicles aren't exempt. Though I would make them still pay at the crossing itself. You can have two queues at airports, why not at a toll?

They fee should have long been stopped, but probably never will be.

Wasn't it sold to a French company, which is why the 'we'll stop charging a toll once it's paid off' thing went out the window?

No. The "we'll stop charging once it's paid off" went out the window when Labour decided to change it from a toll, to a charge in April 2003. The day the tolls were due to stop.

I use the tunnel and bridge often due to having outlaws in Essex. I've set up an account with the toll company and top it up when needed. Only costs £1.70 a pop each way doing it this way.

Doesn't make it right though. They should be paying me to go into Essex

Think of it as £3.40 to get out instead. A bargain

Does the traffic move any faster though ...or is it the same old bottleneck?
