I just read about the sad passing of Brian Wood, after a long illness. He was our centre half when we won promotion from Div 3 in the 63/4 season. Brian was among all the players we signed from West Brom when Dick Graham came back to the club, and then we sold him to Orient when we were back in Div 2. From there he moved to Colchester before ending his career at Workington, a club he loved and he had fond memories of some bruising local derbies v Barrow. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a reunion a few years ago and he said the highlight of his career was playing against Real Madrid in 1962 where he marked Di Stefano & Puskas. He showed me his prized possession - a Real shirt he got after the game, the No 5 (Santamaria). I asked him why he didn't get Puskas or Di Stefano's shirt - he said he wanted the No 5 shirt as that was his position. In later years he lived near to Dick Graham in Colchester and spent a lot of time helping him as he got old & unsteady. A lovely bloke and fine servant of all the clubs he played for. RIP.

This is sad news for me & my brother; Brian Wood was my first 'favourite player' when, as an 8 year old Palace supporter, & a regular at all the 3.00.p.m k.o. home games, I wrote a 100 word piece about him for a competition for boys run by the Palace programme staff in 1964.My 10-y-o brother wrote about his hero Cliff Holton (with a little help from my late dad!)& we won 2 complimentary tickets each for an upcoming fixture. My brother's entry was printed in the programme v Charlton; mine, alas, was an also-ran!(which Brian certainly wasn't!). I do remember using the words 'towering presnce' (I was a very well-read 8 y.o.!) & that my dad strongly influenced my admiration (still strong!) for cool, calm, skillful & honest centre-halves, which describes Brian Wood to a T! He always signed his autograph when asked & was a smiling & friendly hero to a young Palace fan like me! He was one of the best!

Sad news. He was a Palace regular when I first started following the team. I recall him breaking his leg in a 3rd round cup tie against Bury in early 1965. By pure chance I also saw him playing for Workington in a match at Chester in the mid 1970s.

Very sad to hear of Brian Wood's death. I first saw him play in the Reserves. He was head and shoulders above the rest. Regular Reserve watchers couldn't understand why he wasn't in the First Team. It didn't take long though and he performed brilliantly. Like Jim Cannon he wasn't that tall for a centre back but he made up for it with good timing and cool headedness. A good servant. I hope he got appropriate tributes in the local press and the last programme. Judging from the chairman's attitude towards our greatest ever player Johnny Byrne I'm not overly optimistic. RIP Brian Wood.
lo Selhurst silva felix, lo Selhurst cara nutrix, viget, vigeat, vigebit! Best team:- Jackson; Gilbert, Evans, Cannon, Sansom; Hughes, Kember, McNichol; Byrne, Holton, Wright. |

Nothing for him or Jeff Bourne but I know the club is aware.
