Which manager took us from the old 1st division to the 3rd but is still revered by those who remember those times?
Malcolm Allison changed Palace's image and laid the foundations for a resurgence. Heady days including the 1976 cup run, Fiona Richmond in the team bath, two fingers to the Elland Road cop and the Chelsea Shed and that hat.
Is his reputation deserved or was he just lucky to have Terry Venables as an up and coming coach?

Wash your mouth out Catfish!! LOL

Big Mal achieved all that stuff DESPITE Venables, not because of him.

I love the above spat between Big Mal and Mullery, he gave him a verbal shoeing!

Fantastic clip. What a chippy little bugger Mullery was/is.

I remember that Chelsea incident clearly. Allison walked out into the middle of the park then ambled slowly towards the Shed, where 5,000 hod-carriers howled abuse at him. He held up his hand and the noise racked up a couple of notches. Was only in the papers the next day that it became clear he's held up three fingers (one for each Palace goal, obviously). Still not keen on his half-arsed Seventies-style rebranding –"Hey, let's look like Barcelona!" – and meaningless Eagles nickname change, though.

Yes I was there too and remember how well the Chelsea lot took it. No sense of humour then or now. having said that it was a very dodgy thing to do. If someone did that these days they would be done for inciting a riot.

Here's a bit of trivia you might not know...

I was in the same class as Malcolm's daughter at Selsdon Primary in the 70's. Not that amazing I hear you say?

In the same class was a certain Keith Millen!

I remember Michelle being a very attractive blonde (OK I was 11 at the time).

Unfortunately I lost touch with both of them when I went to secondary school but it has been so great to see Keith come back to his 'home' team.

I'm convinced that interview/argument was the actual start of the hostilities between us and Brighton.

It's obvious Big Mal and Mullery hate each other.

Not a Palace memory but a Man City mate of mine remembers going to a testimonial at Maine Road in the 70's where a "fat guy" came on a sub and nearly brought the house down by scoring with a 30 yard piledriver. Twas Big Mal. I think he retirted from the game quite early following a serious leg break. Rather like Coppell.

My understanding is that he retired after he had a lung removed following contracting 'TB'.

Suspwxt you may well be right - don't recall any real hostility earlier.

As I just brought this up on another thread, for all the great memories I will never entirely forgive Mal for his shoddy treatment of John Jackson.

Sydenham by birth. Selhurst by the Grace of God.

He continued to be an excellent keeper for Orient. Wonder what the story was there?
