don't get me wrong, I very much dislike Howard Webb and feel that he has cost us in the previous 2 games that he has officiated, but are we big enough to admit that he put in a pretty good performance yesterday. How many times have we seen him try to make it the Howard Webb show, but yesterday he pointed to the penalty spot, then on advice from the linesman, correctly reversed the decision. I would usually expect him to stand there posturing saying "I am Howard Webb, and if I say its a penalty, its a penalty". But yesterday, he seemed to be a little more understated, and gave a fair amount of what I felt were correct decisions for both sides. I really don't like doing it, but feel you probably have to give credit where its due.

By awarding the penalty initially clearly showed that he just guessed it. He should have consulted the lino first rather than looking like a fool afterwards.

you could say he guessed the penalty decision, or you could say he made a decision on what he thought he saw, and was then prepared to reverse the decision after consultation with the lino.

No, he gave what he thought he saw, the player definitely moved his body to the ball and contact was made, in normal play time that could have looked like an arm made contact with the ball, and he had the commonsense to consult the linesman.

He got that one spot on, and the one with Bolasies less than graceful theatrics 100% correct, neither were penalties.

He was better yesterday although, there was one instance when a Villa defender flew into a tackle, got hurt himself from that we were bearing down on goal and he blew up to get the Villa player some attention.

Then when play started up again he gave Guzan (Villa Keeper) the ball to start play off.

But apart from that he was good.

He missed a pen in the Guzan clash with Jedi. Guzan ran into Jedi and knocked him to the ground, which probably wasn't a pen, and Webb indicated as such. But Guzan aimed a kick at Jedi as he went down, which should have been a pen and even a red card. Webb missed it because he was walking away from Guzan and Jedi after signalling no pen. That was shown on the Sky recording of the game at 10pm. It wasn't shown on MoD.
PS It was also analysed on Goals on Sunday and Roberto Martinez said it was a pen and a sending-off - if Webb had seen it.

He done the right thing with the handball. The Bolasie one is close but if you can not tell on a replay if there was contact then no way can he give a pen so no errors well done Mr Webb.

yes good performance...his only mistake in my eyes was missing the jedi/guzan incident.

on the whole, a good performance.

so when the villa player goes down in the first half and he doesn't blow and plays on, Ward takes the shot, Webb calls for the physio and then proceeds to give a free kick????????

doesn't book the villa player for deliberately kick the ball away, and the player gets booked in the 2nd half so should have been his second?????????

gives a foul against Jedi when Guzan takes him out.

and that's just the few that spring to mind!

The keeper actually kicked out at Jedinak, not even a yellow card for him, but a free kick for Villa? Stupid decision.
