Was chatting to a mate at work (Liverpool supporter) about the Sunderland match and he asked me what happens if the 18th / 17th teams finish with the same points and same goal difference.

I always thought they would look at the head to head matches during the season between the two teams. If it was Sunderland (3-1, 0-0) we'd take the chocolates..

If it was West Brom (0-2 and 3-1) what would happen...?

BUT... apparently it comes down to who has scored more goals.

Moral of the story; we better not finish even with anyone or we're f*cked.

Whilst relegation will be a kick in the knackers, I don't I would be grumbling too much if we were relegated down due to goals for. If it's that close, that you can't desperate two teams between points and then goal difference, then I think we could probably all recognize and hold our hands up to not scoring enough.

Hopefully, it won't come to that, one way or the other.

If everything is the same. Points, goal difference, goals scored, head to heads then it's down to drawing straws I believe.

Optimistic as ever

I hate the emphasis that is placed on Goals scored. I mean yes, the objective is to score, but equally, it is to defend too.
The away goal rule really bugs me.

Football is about scoring goals, not to get crazy scorelines like an Ice Hockey match but goals. Can you imagine watching football if everyone played like Palace.

So far we've been relegated on a record 49 points, and as a 4th from bottom team. Relegated on goals scored would continue the hard luck story!

Disciplinary record then the FA can arrange a play off if required.

Not sure about the Premier League, but in most leagues they have a playoff, either on a neutral ground or like here in Holland, it's home and away and if it's still level they play a third game until a result.
