During this transfer window, most comments seem to indicate that we don't have much money to spend. We seem to be still regarded as the poorest club in the premiership. I thought Premier League would mean minimum income of over £100m per season. I know it is not a good idea to pile up huge debts as the likes of Cardiff and Hull are doing and also know we did not spend effectively in August but surely we can afford a couple of quality signing (purchase price and 2-3 years of contract wages amounting to say £20 million) without the risk of financial ruin.

So what is the score. Is it that:
The £100m is wrong ..and our income levels are much lower
We have too big a wage bill after the spending spree under Holloway (it was hardly extravagant by PL standards !)
Our owners consider the price and wages of available players to be not reasonable ...I think this is the case with some of the signing we have been linked with.
or are our owners just conservative and don't want to risk the future of the club.

Steve Browett was heard to tell the HF at a game recently that The Premier League had given us £6o mill.

I think the 100 mill - 120 mill that was quoted by the papers is over 3 seasons and include's parachute payments, could be wrong but that's what i've heard from various sources.

We would have had maybe the first instalment of Premier League money and another is around now I believe. The main part comes at the end of the season as TV rights etc are worked out and dispersed. Perhaps we have had 10 mil or so - but that is pretty much a rough estimate. The full value of one season in the Premiership is 60 mil. However, remember that every single expense, fee and wage goes up - silly things like insurance will almost double - the kind of expenses most of the fans seem to be forgetting about. We will not be going into admin but we will certainly have no more than perhaps 5 mil for players currently - depending on how the Zaha money has been paid.
If we want a big player it will be in instalments that we buy him - not in one fell swoop.

that's how it was explained back when all this promotin malarkey happened. The £100-140 mill figures that have been banded about take into account the amount for getting promoted and the parachute payments over the subsequent 2nd and 3rd years were we to get relegated.

I'd assume that you dont go spending it all on Carlos Kickaball at £200k a week as the minute we get relegated, he's gone at a fraction of what he was bought for, leaving us hugely out of pocket. multiply that by a few players and you can see why CPFC2010 are as hesitant as they are - rightly so.

Just one bargain basement player joining our club will be a financial drain. Four or five quality player, much more so.

Ideally, we should strengthen, but incomers will have to be an investment.

And that's the difficulty.

If just one, bargain basement player joining our club will be a financial drain then CPFC2010 are totally incompetent. As I don't believe that's the case, your statement is palpably rubbish (unless you believe all businesses should succeed without hiring any employees).

All incomers are an investment, whether they work out or not. A 33 year old with no sell on fee who scores 7 goals in the next three months and keeps us up is a very, very sound investment. Sell-on fees are not the only way of making money out of a player you know.

Off the top of my head I believe the accounts noted there were a number of expenses after the period they run up to;

£18m in transfer fees from the summer
£4m in ground improvements
£2.2m for the training ground
£4m in promotion bonuses
£10m in repaying debt to the directors

There were £18m in wages last year, we can expect that to have risen substantially (a random guess might be somewhere over £20m). So that's the vast majority of the £60m TV money gone straight away. That leaves gate money and sponsorship deals to cover routine maintenance and general running expenses, I couldn't hazard a guess at how much that would generate/leave, but it's unlikely to come close to covering a couple of £6m+ players on prem wages...

All plausible ...I personally have seen very little value for the £4 m in ground improvement ..if indeed all this money has been spent already.

So it seems we have very little money to spend ..in which case it is futile to the debate possibility of big name signings. I personaly don't think we are in too bad a position to fight for survival and our current squad is good enough to keep us up.

There is also a risk of destabilizing the current squad/team if a couple of high earners are brought in ..and turn out to be mediocre.

So overall ...focus on getting the best from the squad we have rather than bring fresh faces ?

Kevin Philipps Turned out to be great investment last year at the age of 39!!

I'm definitely inclined to agree. The work on the ground mostly involved the tv gantry, cabling, building the tv studio thing etc, so won't be immediately apparent either way. But maybe a couple of shrewd acquisitions might help, and Browett assures us we have a "reasonably pleasing" budget to bring people in. But I wouldn't expect us to be buying particularly big names. Thing is, with the mass hysteria for transfers; It's not that long ago the majority seemed proud of the fact we'd got a squad that can compete, that was assembled for (comparatively) peanuts. I still feel that way, tbh!

Call me naive but wtf is that thing for? No-one has been in it since it was built, it serves no known purpose yet has incurred the wrath of our disabled supporters. disgusting that no on ehad explained or at least apologised.
