I am so old now I need help with my memory when it comes to certain games principally in the cup. I think it was in 1948 when Palace, playing in the Third Division South ,was drawn away against Finchley,a non-league club at the time, and sometime into the second half we were loosing 1 -3 when down came the fog and the match was abandoned. I think it was a week or two later there was a replay and Finchley beat us 3 - 1. Then there was the home match in the cup against Bishop Auckland. I cannot be sure which year it was but it could have been 1949 and they beat us but I cannot remember the the scoreline. After the match the big wigs at the Palace tried to signed the inside forward from Bishop Auckland who did us a lot of damage but he was not interested because I think he recognised we were bloody awful. Then in 1947 after beating Port Vale 2- 1 at home in the cup we drew Chester and they came to Selhurst and beat us 0 - 1. In 1946,we went to play a mid-week league game at Reading. This was not a cup match but we lost 2 -10 and the then Palace captain held a most mortem in a local butcher's shop and ,Fred Dawes, said," I knew the team I was taking to Reading would get a hiding." Does anyone remember who was in these unsuccessful teams? I remember I was about 9 or i0 and each time I cried my eyes out!.

You're spot on about Robb. Ironically he also apparently played for GB in the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki and scored a goal in the only game played, a 3-5 defeat to Luxembourg. I note also that he died aged 86 on Christmas Day last year, the same day as my 90 year old uncle.

Looking at my records, that late 40's period did seem to be a bad time. Even makes the Mullery era look like a holiday camp.

I noticed that in our 48/49 season, we made a club record of 19 league games without being able to score more than 1 goal in a match!

However, Jack Butler and his boys must've been fretting last season as we went within one game of equalling that long standing record. Better luck this year Doog.

Thanks for chipping in with an interesting bit of info. You probably rubbed shoulders with Arthur Rowe. I think he was the nicest guy ever to manage a professional football team! Any thoughts about Arthur's "push and run" philosophy?

I rubbed shoulders with the great Arthur Rowe, well sort of. He was indeed a very nice, quietly spoken man. In those days Palace trained at the ground and on the car park, in the school holidays I used to go and watch them.

Ostensibly Arthur was very tolerant towards the players, particularly that cheeky young upstart Johnny Byrne who was always late despite living a few minutes walk from the ground. Byrne used to skip onto the pitch adjusting his privates with a cheery "Morning Mr Rowe!" Arthur would merely respond with an avuncular grin as he went about his business.

Rowe was well ahead of his time as "push and run" is no different from the current system. They just call it "pass n move!"

Arthur Rowe was indeed an absolute gentleman who had great success at Tottenham with push and run along with some superb players including Eddie Bailey-Les Medley-Ron Burgess-Alf Ramsey-Bill Nicholson-Len Ducguman (sp).

That style of play was very demanding of fitness but was wonderful to watch.

I did exchange correspondence with Arthur about a young left back playing for Bedford Town against Wimbledon in the southern league.

As palace manager he signed some decent players who were happy to sign because of his reputation.

Sorry to bother you again lads but there were two other matches I wanted to get some info on and my memory let me down again. I hope you wont mind digging out something on the two following games: Probably November or December 1947 Palace drew Port Vale at Selhurst in The FA Cup. My Mum and I arrived late by which time the visitors were a goal up. We equalised and then about twenty minutes from time a Palace player got the ball in what would then have been the left-half position, he made a bit of ground and had a go from 20/25 yards. It was not a particularly good shot because it did not carry but the Vale keeper in The Holmesdale goal went down to cover and it bounced over his shoulder and into the net and Palace won 2 - 1. What team did Palace have out that day and who was the player who scored the wobbly winner? In probably the first quarter of 1948 Palace played Swindon at Selhurst in a Thid Division South League match. Now in the many years I have been going to Selhurst I have certainly experienced some rough weather but that saturday afternoon the heavens opened up and the rain fell in a deluge so my Mum and I had to scamper for cover in The Main Stand. That afternoon Millbanks, who was playing center-half for Palace ,sustained a nasty head wound and had to be carried off. If I remember correctly we drew 1 - 1. What was the Palace team that day? Thanks chaps because these matches are what Memories are Made Of so hope you don't mind helping me out.
