Now there was a Goalkeeper STONEWALL JACKSON. Kept us up for Four years in the Top Flight. And I agree Alan Stephenson was excellent. PS Big Mal dropped a clanger with HAMMOND.

We were playing Leeds and one of their lot made heavy contact with Jacko and he didn't like it. Grabbed him and really lost it for a second. Can't remember who it was he grabbed, anyone remember it?

I was at the Wolves game with my Dad and Jacko did play a blinder. He made save after save and had it not been for him it would have been a cricket score. I recall reading that the Wolves manager went into the Palace dressing room to tell Jacko that it was one of the best goalkeeping displays he had ever seen. The late Peter Knowles, brother of Cyril, played that day for Wolves, as did Terry Wharton, who later played for us. Jacko went onto make many appearances for us and kept us in the then 1st Division with his fantastic displays. His presence around the six yard area was immence. One of my Palace heroes and me and my Dad had the pleasure of having a chat with him at Victoria after the 2-0 win away to Arsenal in the League Cup back in 1970.

John Jackson - Palace Number One. I've said this a few times before and he is without doubt our best keeper (at least since 1962). That game where he lost it - there is a photo (I don't have it) of him trying to strangle Colin Stein of Coventry, he's kneeling on him and looking like he's about to brain him. The Wolves game was on Match of the Day, one of the very first, they showed it at around 8pm on BBC2 I think. We were dreadful in that game, barely mustering one shot. Stonewall Jackson was born that day.
Zaha, Williams, Murray, Ambrose, Scannell. A 5-man forward line who scored 3 goals in 10 minutes on 27th September 2011 at ....................... |

I started supporting Palace 63-64 so all those players in this recording are very familiar to me. Yes, Jackson turned into a top rate keeper although he took a bit of time to become an automatic 1st choice - after Glazier left Dick Graham bought in Tony Millington and for a while he was number 1. However, Jackson's superiority gradually became evident. Could have played for England but for Banks and Shilton. As for the rest of them. The less said about the lumbering strike pairing of Lawson and Kevan the better. There were some decent players such as Long, Howe, Burnside, Stephenson and Bannister, although not so evident in this game ( actually the balance of play in this game reminded of a number of Palace performances this past season!). I think we finished 11th in the table in 65-66. It's interesting to note that overall the style of play and skill level didn't look that different from a Championship game today. The main differences were in the presentation - only two camera angles, no close-ups or action replays, no shots of the managers, and good old Ken's avuncular, homely chat to the camera.

Got a few photos of Jacko, as you might imagine seeing as photographers always went down our end as most games were played in our penalty box. This is one of my favourites, from our first game in Div 1 and early in the game, George Best cut inside along the edge of the box and shot towards the near post, but Jacko dived to push it for a corner while Denis Law lurked and John McCormick looked on. Saw Big Mac a few years ago and asked him to sign it - he did, but only on the condition that Law hadn't scored from the rebound. Professional pride. Attendance 48,610. One of the bigger days in our history.
