Its a tough question! Kenny was certainly great but when it came to results I was never diappointed by Cliff Holton. Cliff always got the goals when we needed them.! It must have been in the sixties when Cliff banged in a few at The County Ground in Swindon and we beat em 6 - 3.

couldn't name just one player, there are several over the years that i have followed palace, including johnny byrne, bobby woodruff, gerry queen, john jackson, nigel martyn, wrighty, geoff thomas, aj, the list goes on and on, but if you are forcing me to name just one then it's.........AJ for me.

I couldn't think of what game he meant, so I looked up our games at Swindon in Cliff's time at Palace:-

62-3 L 0-1
64-5 L 0-2

(63-4 didn't play them as they were promoted at end of 62-3 season).

So I tried to find a game he might be confusing it with. How about:-

Watford away 6th April 63 W 4-1 Holton 3

I remember a match at Loftus Road back in 63,it was 0-0 at half time and it ended up QPR 3 Palace 4 with two to Holton and Peter Burridge got the other two.

I was lucky enough at that period in time to get very close to our Players off of the pitch....because of this I found out how our Players got on with each other outside of the game....which was pretty good.

But for me it's a no brainer the greatest player I have ever seen in a Palace shirt..the Late Great....Johnny Byrne!!!!

And a lovely fella into the bargain!!

........................Then along came Johnny Byrne! and the rest, as they say, is history.....................

This is a great, if simple question.

When I was growing up, I got to see Ian Wright, John Salako, Nigel Martyn, Geoff Thomas...and plenty more. It was a great time.

Since then, there have been those who I've admired for their skill: Lombardo, Jansen, Freedman, Curcic, Zaha etc. There have also been players who have done amazing jobs in difficult times: Andy Linighan, Alan Lee, Neil Danns, Calvin (I know that won't be popular) and a real left-field memory - a lad called David Woozley who came into the centre of defence - only about 18 years old - last time we were in administration and put in some great performances. Never really made it in the professional game, which really shows how well he stepped up to the plate back then. Darren Ambrose is probably a combination of both of the above - as is Freedman, both as player and manager.

So - what makes a favourite player. It was always difficult to beat Ian Wright - coming off the bench to score twice at Wembley when I was young and excitable - it was an amazing thing to see. I think I'd have picked him as my favourite Palace player for a long time. These days, I'd say Geoff Thomas every time. Not just because of what he's done since playing but, when I look back and watch videos of our games from his day, I don't think I've ever seen a better example of a leader on the pitch.

Every time I re-watch the 1990 semi final, his performance gets a little better. It was, to me, similar to Roy Keane's famous performance agaisnt Juventus - but Thomas was and is a great bloke - not a vile and vindictive scumbag who should be banned from the game for life.

When I look back on the way he played, it's of little surprise that he's gone on to do what he has in the face of adversity. He personifies courage and determination - whilst remaining a truly likable character. I can't think of a better example of a professional - and it's great to see that he keeps an intereset in all things Palace as well.
