looking for info on Ron Brett who had 2 spells with Palace 1955 to 1962, doing my family history and Ron was a cousin of mine, toby65. I remember him playing. He was a tall dark handsome looking man (a family trait?) with a languid style of playing. He often played on the right wing where he looked out of place due to his height and lack of pace. I am sure you will know that he returned to Palace as a makeweight part of the Johnny Byrne deal in March 1962. On his return he scored one goal in eight games before suffering an untimely demise about 6 months later, a few days before his 25th birthday. I believe he was involved in a car crash. Great shame.

Thanks for replies so far, keep them coming, as for the accident it happend in the early hours of the morning when Ron and a reserve goalkeeper of West Ham United were returning from a night out, the car hit a post office lorry and Ron was killed the goalkeeper was hurt not sure how serious, or his name? the last game Ron played was for palace reserves against West Ham reserves, and as far as i know both Palace and West Ham players were at the funeral.toby65 Attachment: ronnie brett.jpg (42.78Kb)

I remember that very well and he had a hard act to follow, coming in as make weight, when Johnny Byrne left,he was a really decent guy though and his death was a terrible shock.
........................Then along came Johnny Byrne! and the rest, as they say, is history..................... |

This is from a thread on the cpfc site: Ron Brett died in Clerkenwell when his car ran into a British Rail lorry in the early hours of the morning. The passenger in the car was Brian Rhodes who was the West Ham reserve goalie at the time-he survived. Thread also says that Rhodes emigrated to Oz and died there around 2000. Edited by peterg (09 May 2011 8.35pm)

He has his own Wiki page which also has a link to a West Ham stats page that gives his full career with them. Must admit I didn't know he started at Palace and went to West Ham first off.
The crowd is outstanding, and especially with the penalty after 44 minutes it was clear when we came out after half-time the welcome would be pretty loud and not too friendly. Crystal Palace wanted to strike back, so that was all clear. This is a wonderful place to play football - Jurgen Klopp |

It's a bit difficult to list them all on here but when I get a chance I can give you a list of the games in which he scored. He appeared to like playing against QPR! His full record is shown in Crystal Palace - A complete record by Mike Purkiss with Nigel Sands. It's for sale on Amazon but is not cheap. Also Nigel wrote a book 'Crystal Palace The A-Z' which contains a photo of Ron.
