Crazy to go to all that effort when they could simply have used animal skin garments for goalposts.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

Why do the French make omelettes with only one egg?

Because in France one egg is un oeuf.

Formidable.

Did you hear about the French chef who committed suicide? He lost the huile d’olive.

Yes, it's amazing.

I guess it's hard to put yourself in the mindset of neolithic people or know what level of technology that had acquired and from where they go it.

It's the weight, the engineering, the bare rough tracks (if any?) followed over 100s miles undoubtedly through chiefdoms which may not have been welcoming. The sheer devotional insanity.

And there is Avebury. Not just the many henges (much larger than Stonehenge up the road) but also those really deep ditches dug fervently by the poor folk deep deep into the bedrock using nothing but the shoulder blade bones of cattle.

The phrase "what were they thinking?" never more apposite.

Try and get a builder to make a patio today and you'll be amazed how they did anything in the past.

I prefer Avebury. You can get among the stones. I went there at about 5 in the morning a few years back. It was misty and no one about. Very atmospheric.
The earthworks are incredible alone. Imagine the amount of time and people it took to dig that out.
