I'm sad to read of the death of David Wilkie at the age of 70. In my early teenage years he was a popular British sportsman; in 1972, he was the first British man to win an Olympic medal in 68 years. In 1976 he won 2 Olympic medals - gold and silver - when the whole GB team only won 13 medals, including his 2. He was unbeaten in his main event - 200m breaststroke - for over 4 years. RIP.

I remember him well, as a non-swimmer as a kid I had a fascination with the swimming in the olympics, strangely considering I couldn’t swim(still can’t) I loved watching it. If I remember right he had the unenviable task of competing against Mark Spitz in that era, otherwise he would’ve won more medals

Sad news, RIP

when a gangster dies, in a mafia movie they all say "he sleeps with the fishes".

i cannot say what is the operand term for an Olympic Swimmer. He has gone up to the great big Towel in the sky ? i do recall Wilkie doing the odd TV appearance. Seemed a swimmingly good bloke.

RiP

When these sporting icons keel over, at what is now a young age, it makes you wonder.

Thank you to David Wilkie.

RIP

I remember seeing him on TV a lot in the 1970's in his GB speedos. He seemed quite a quiet man. Much respect to his sporting achievements.
