'Deadly' has died aged 78. Kent & England's highest spin-bowling wicket taker. His left-arm deliveries earned him his nick-name. He could be unplayable, especially if there was any damp. RIP Deadly Derek.

RIP Deadly Derek. Indeed. He was a marvellous bowler capable of tying up an end for hours without seeming to tire and as Steely says on a wet wicket he could be unplayable.

I will always remember a test match against pakistan at the Oval. There was a long rain break and nobody thought to cover the wickets. Enter 'Deadly', bowled them all out for 52. There was nearly an international incident, they were furious. Happy days.

As a cricket fan and Man of Kent, or is it Kentish Man ( I can never remember) I was saddened by this news. I always think of him alongside him those other Kent stalwarts of the 60s and early 70s .. Brian Luckhurst, Alan Knott, John Shepherd, Asif Iqbal, Colin Cowdrey ..
