ah yes. King William of Orange. The poster boy for Ulster Protestants. And where is Orange ? its a principality in Provence, France. And still today its a predominantly Catholic region. Although today it does have many non-Catholics too. Protestant ? nope, but your clue is that they would be highly unlikely to consume a Pork hot-dog at a Glasgow Rangers match. I was in Orange couple of years ago. A lot of Africans there from what I saw anyway. Loads of Muslims everywhere in bigger French towns.

We won the War. We beat Hitler. Incorrect. Focus on the two tables at the bottom of this link. In terms of soldiers dying in action ie while fighting....the number for the UK is tiny. if you are counting 'winning a War' by, for example, the US putting 3 or 4 fellas into a plane to fly over Hiroshima & Nagasaki.....then yes, the Allies won the war. But if you count the number of grunts in boots on the ground ? then the Soviets beat Hitler and the Chinese beat Japan. The UK ? barely much more than a statistical spectator..... whether or not 'we won the war'...i will grant you that we did suffer. A little old lady, minding her own business and drinking tea in the East End....Luftwaffe, boom, RiP. A city air-bombardment that the UK also did to Dresden et al. So if you tally the life of Mrs Smith of Dagenham to the life of Frau Schmidt in Dresden then ....was that the brits winning the War and beating Hitler ? i am not too sure. I still think it was the Red Army. Edited by PalazioVecchio (02 May 2024 3.04pm) Edited by PalazioVecchio (02 May 2024 3.08pm)

What did for Germany directly was the Russians, but once America entered the war, it was only a matter of time before Japan and Germany were defeated. They could never complete with the American military industry.

I've often said, although it isn't my field of history, that once Dunkirk happened, then The Battle of Britain, then the Germans had lost. Throw in the Battle of Atlantic and North Africa and it was a matter of time. Probably invading Russia sealed the deal as it were - war on two fronts. US hastened the final victory. Can't really fully speculate but I guess Britain not losing and already the writing was on the wall. I think numbers of combatants and casualties is perhaps misleading. Look at any Nazi offensive and you'll notice they usually went against Americans or certainly Russians. Tacit recognition that British soldiers would perhaps be better? Not sure, although many of the Germans did seem to speak words to that effect.
