Fourth worst in this league. And when you discount Sheffield & Burnley, who are playing the symphony on the Titanic, its a shocking indictment. Of course the cumulative total is largely ascribed to the Croydon-Roy era. However, surely this must now be the biggest challenge for Glasner the Glazier ? Of course, putting our squad onto an attacking footing may cost us in the defence statistics. And maybe Roy was conscious of a lack of quality & depth in our squad....choosing to play it safe. We do not want to make a Brendan Rogers mistake....great at attack but leaving an open goal for Crystanbul. And a goal from a set piece is as rare as a hens-tooth. But Eagles, we are looking toothless in attack. Edited by PalazioVecchio (10 Mar 2024 9.30am)

The problem we have is that 2/3rds of our attacking trident are taken by players who are praised for their work rate above their finishing ability. Mateta scored a great goal yesterday and was regularly praised for being a complete nuisance etc but, ultimately, he should have had at least two, probably a hat-trick. If he'd scored one of those other chances, we'd have won. Similarly Ayew. Gets praised for never stopping running, his defensive work and winning loads of free kicks (although we're useless at set pieces) but his goal rate isn't good enough. Unless other players come back from injury in the next three weeks, I think Edoaurd should start our next game in place of Ayew. He might be lazy but he knows where the goal is and then you can hopefully go a couple up and then bring Ayew on to help see the game out after that.
We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold... |

The lessons from Benteke are that managers need to be ruthless with an underperforming player. We absolutely cannot keep giving second chances and excuses for fellas who are consistently off target. is the shortcoming in finishing ? or is it in not enough decent 'assists' ? Luton were absolutely there for the taking, after our first goal. The pantomime played out for all to see. We are toothless in the final Third. Had Brentford, Notts Forest, or Everton gone one goal up , at home, after 11 minutes...against Luton. The final score would have been at least 3 or 4 goals to the good. And it seems to be a problem every week. Edited by PalazioVecchio (10 Mar 2024 11.34am) Edited by PalazioVecchio (10 Mar 2024 11.46am)

But I do agree with the point you are making.

He may know where the goal is but he has trouble putting the ball in it. He hasn't scored since the first week of December. If Mateta had Olise and Eze regularly scoring off his lay-offs this would not be a thread. Edouard is much less suited to Glasner's pressing style

Bournemouth just put 4 past Luton. All in the second half. Final score 4-3 Luton's recent form has been diabolical. All goes to highlight just how toothless our attack is.

What makes it even more worrying is we're second best on count of big chances missed. Add that to the number of goals scored, and the realisation that many of those goals were pretty special, and we just aren't creating anything of value. Add together Big Chances Missed + Goals Scored and we're level with Sheff Utd and 6 behind Burnley. Some of the goals that came from nothing: Lerma v Chelsea, Andersen v United, Ayew v Everton, the Sheff Utd goals..

watching Brentford vs ManUre....i saw a small club with infinite confidence, aggression, drive and ambition. Never swayed by the quality of their opposition, they attacked for 99 minutes. And should, by rights, have won. Brentford are slightly beneath us, in the table, but looked like an upper-mid-table team.

They didn’t look like it at Selhurst though when Eze and Olise took them apart
