Why is our record this season one of the worst in the PL for conceding goals in the last 20 mins. IMO we were not troubled with our set up on Saturday for the first 70 mins and then it all goes wrong yet again. Is it a fitness issue? Concentration?

A lot has been said about fitness Dave , and to be honest we do look very jaded . My guess is it about possession. Its a well known fact that you have to work a hell of alot harder when you are chasing down the ball and trying to get possession, especially when youare talking the stats in the first half of the game against Spurs , i think we had 12 percent which is lets just say very bad . The players must have dreaded coming out for the second half . I also think that the subs that were brought on didnt in the words of Roy improve the quality of the team, i think the choices were wrong , the players he brought on did not have the legs for the pace of the game , while we had younger and fitter players on the bench .

For me its all about squad depth . We just dont have the quality on the bench that other teams do and come the later stages when other teams like Spurs are bringing on 4 like for like we are bringing on lesser players On Saturday Spurs brought on Johnson , Holbjerg, Sarr ,Lo Celso and a kid in added time . We had Will Hughes, Edouard and Franca . Im knocking our lads just .The 5 subs was always going to hurt teams in bottom half like us , It just widened the gap and even if teams do manage to stay in the game the top sides just bring 5 internationals on at we get overpowered at the end of games .

I think it's a range of factors, each contributing to our players flagging at the end of games. First of all Roy's substitutions were always very late and often a reaction to us conceding, rather than proactively trying to prevent it. I think if you start making subs around the 60 minute mark, as a lot of managers do, you'd inject more energy into the side. Secondly the brand of football we've played has been very low possession and that is tiring. It's obviously far more tiring to be chasing the ball and desperately fending off wave after wave of attack than it is to have the ball and to pass it between your own players. Thirdly there is the speculation that training wasn't great under Roy and that we trained a day less than most other sides, meaning the players probably aren't as fit to begin with. Combine all these things, unfit players playing an exhausting brand of football and not being helped by the subs, and it's easy to see why fatigue costs us goals and also encourages injuries.

I think for me its a combination: Squad depth - we just don't have enough 1st team ready players to bring on. For us, a sub offers fresh legs, but a significant drop in quality. Fitness/Training - I've got a link into the ex head of sports science, and they regularly raised concern about players being tired going into games. Glasner has been vocal about addressing this with 120% training midweek, and a rest day pre-match. Mentality - The players are scared of losing. Everton was a prime example of this, you don't go from being full of energy and pressing to sitting back immediately. Glasner needs to get the players to believe they can win games.

Have always thought this. There are games that we've dominated for 70 minutes against lower sides in the past, taken the lead and then suddenly reverted to this desperate defend at all costs mentality. If you've dominated until that point and the other team are suddenly being forced to go for it, surely you should try and capitalise on that and get another goal, rather than giving up all momentum and trying to cling on. Reckon as well as our new fitness coach the squad need a psychologist.

I was going to ask if the psychologist was for the players or the management team, but maybe its both. FYI: It worked for Ted Lasso (spoiler alert) Originally posted by Canterbury Palace

i wonder if some of the more elderly players is the problem ? tired legs. Or maybe the very youthful players do not have as much mental fortitude to remain focussed for the end of a game ? or do our dieticians have an explanation for the lack of energy ?

Lets not forget .......our record of conceding a goal, within the first four minutes, is also dire.
