If we really want him we'll need to cough up what Posh want especially if there are other PL clubs seriously interested.

As I recall, we had this battle with Posh over the same player a while back and if I'm not mistaken we wouldn't pay their asking price for Toney either, so Brentford got him.

We could've very well matched Brentford's bid for Toney as according to Barry Fry a few P'ship sides matched the asking price. They letToney decide and he chose Brentford as thought the best chance of progressing his career at the time.

Maybe the fact that he didn't get a look in at Newcastle played a part in his decision.

If we accept this as being true couple of questions cross my mind;

Doesn’t sound like a Hodgson signing at all to me - we have seen this season Roy is reluctant (nicest way I could put it) to play youth and potential - so is someone else pulling the strings in the background..?? Southgate maybe given the England connection..??

Secondly does this mean we are resigned to losing either Guehi or Andersen - I would suggest it does..!!

Not saying I am right, and I could be taking 2 and 2 and coming up with 10 - but on the face of it does all seem very un Roy like - and not just a little odd..!!

I think its very clear that Roy has next to little to do with the transfers. (Think he mentioned this week that Franca was signed before he was in post)

Like it or not, 90% of managers in this league are pretty transient, so the sporting director needs to ultimately be in charge of building the playing squad. So no I don't think it means Southgate is coming. I think it just looks like we are interested in a highly rated young player.

IMO we need to sell Anderson this summer. He'll be 28 in the summer so realistically has 1 more bumper 5 year contract in him. And this will reflect the height of his value. If we could sell him for c.40m after buying for under 20m that would be very good business.

As others have pointed out, it’s the DofF, Dougie Freedman that is responsible for player transfers.

And what is this obsession that some have with Southgate ?

I would say that it’s inevitable that we lose either Guehi or Andersen or even both. The club need to generate transfer funds and they are two of the few saleable assets we have. But that won’t be until the summer. And Peterborough will insist Edwards remains with them on loan for the rest of this season.

Not forgetting Steve Parish and Ben Stevens.

Anderson’s our main distributor from defence with his long ball. Not that easy to find. Also he’s a real leader. Yes we’d have a healthy profit but perhaps it’s less damaging and more profitable to sell Guehi.

Agreed. Our attacking play (even under Vieira) really suffered whenever Andersen was missing. Plus we'd be likely to get closer to 60m for Guehi given age and regular England first teamer.

yep, i would agree, Andersen is also better in the air, in an ideal world we would keep both, but it isnt

The size of our club and available budget often dictates the players we can realistically attract. The purchase of Edwards would be an admission that we made a mistake with Richards who is deemed next inline for a CB start should one of the main incumbents be injured or sold!

I think we need to rethink our strategy for longer term objectives which pains me to say the sale of Olise and Guehi this summer for an excess of 100M then invest in additional younger players such as Edwards and Franca for example!

We will have to nurture 10M players and turn them into diamonds to survive. Alternatively someone invests 250M in the playing staff and we add proven internationals into our current squad which would move us into the European football conversation.

I do think it’s an either / or conundrum!

I don't think that's the case as the supposed purchase is probably to replace Richards as the third cab on the rank when he becomes a starter upon the sale of one of our two current starters
