Kudus' Goal - A Coaches Perspective anyone?

Morning, All.

So - Kudus' goal. Saw lots of flack towards Mitchell's play, but personally from my position largely of ignorance I felt that seemed harsh.

Surely at the point/before the ball was played, you would expect your LB to squeeze in to stop the more direct threat through the middle, and when it's passed out wide (to a less dangerous position) he got back in position and would have impacted the play had it not been for the fact it was played immediately on the volley.

I lay the blame solely at Hughes' door who DID get caught ball watching, stepped out of position then could never recover, letting Kudus get his unopposed shot off for the goal.

However - any football coaches out there who can say how they see it? Am I talking total cobblers?

No, I think you've summed it up well.

Hughes was guilty of doing nothing other than ball watching.

Mitchell ' tucked in ' as he would have been instructed to do.

Yes Kudus got a clear run into the box and if it was Hughes job to pick him up and stop the run and shot then so be it.

It was to easy for Kudus no pressure on the run or shot.

I called it straight away, never gave Mitchell a thought, but Hughes was caught napping. Also a keeper of Sam’s quality shouldn’t be letting a tame effort like that slip passed him

Don't think he would've if it wasn't for Guehi's slight deflection off the top of his boot to wrong foot SJ.

This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise.

Yes Hughes missed the tackle on Kudos then let him run away from him . He does it every game ,lets his man go then starts pointing at things as if he is directing play . Drives me bonkers to be honest

Yeah maybe, but less popular keepers would’ve got slaughtered for letting that slip by them, deflection or not

Am I correct in thinking that Hughes wasn't a regular at lowly Watford before we acquired him? The role he is trying to fill is beyond his meagre ability, which again, says a lot about our recruitment policy - buy cheap and hope for the best.

In his final season at Watford, 2020-21, before he joined us, he made 31 appearances but I have no information as to how many were from the bench.
He was actually Marco Silva's first signing at Watford.

Wasn't someone supposed to pick up Coufal down the side? I'd think the left winger (Ayew) should have spotted him and picked him up.

Palaces basic shape ,which is most games a narrow back four, means they are always leaving opposition sitting on flanks with a lot of room to start with, Mitchell gets stick at times but it’s obvious he goes by instruction . In this case Hugh’s mistakes as there were two , allowed Kudos to take up a perfect position to finish a quick pass from his fullback. If Hugh’s had nailed Kudos, Coufal , would have used a bit more thinking time as to where to cross to, time for Palace to put. a bit more pressure on him , ,yes maybe Ayew might have closed on him, but he can’t be expected to spend all his time chasing fullbacks anyway,. It didn’t alter the outcome anyway ,with Hugh’s help ,Kudos made life really easy for Coufal, and himself as it turned out.
