'Respect for Referees' After Saturdays match when both teams fouled each other a recorded 17 times.
However it is now a record thanks to the wonderful 102 minute performance of Mr Andy Madley that Palace finished with 7 yellow cards and 1 red card and Liverpool with 2!

From what I saw of this contest from the Holmesdale End I am not sure that was officiated in anything akin to a 'respectful way'!!!

No swearing at refs, only captain is allowed to speak to ref, alongside any player who get's pulled for a chat. Any other player approaching a ref for confrontation/ to remonstrate gets retrospective punishment of missing the next match. Sin bins also.

Players behave the way they do because there is no consequence they care about.

Also think at grass roots level there should be more consequence for mouthy parents who abuse refs from a really young age group. Some of it is disgusting. It's hard to punish the parents directly but punish the club/team by points deduction or expel from the league and those abusive parents will soon be alienated by the club and other parents.

Agree with all that.
Football is such a difficult game to referee. Offside, handball, unfair tackles etc etc. All this is made that much harder by an accepted culture of cheating.

It doesn't help that the game seems to be run by corrupt morons.

Why isn't there a clock that governs the time of play like so many other sports? What's the problem with that?

Cheating should be a red card offence. With VAR it should be easier to do so fairly.

The linesman should decide where a throw in should be taken.

Skilful players should be given better protection from dangerous tackling. Just because the defender got to the ball doesn't justify clobbering the attacking player in the process.

What was wrong deciding if a handball was intentional or not?

Shirt pulling is a foul, punish it as such.

Time wasting is bad for the game. In boxing a referee will bollock the boxers if there's too little action. A half decent referee can recognise time wasting.

These all seem fairly obvious to me, why the situation is left as it is, God knows.

Totally agree. Also, and this is very unlikely, the P.F.A. should be pointing out that diving and demanding cards be produced is going against their members interests. And, a pet hate, the commentators and pundits should drop the phrase "entitled to go down" and lauding the professionalism of players who spot a trailing leg and go over.

Looking at this question another way, I think the introduction of VAR has actually reduced the respect that anybody, players, officials and fans, had for referees.

The overriding frustration I have always had with referees is consistency in the application of the rules of the game.

And we are unaware of the ' guidance ' they get from the authorities. For example, I can only assume that they have been told to ignore Foul Throws. How often do you see them go unpunished ?

You cannot put the genie back in the bottle. For all it's faults VAR is here to stay because the big clubs want it.

The only thing that can be done is to try to make it work better.

There is a thought that PGMOL want to train up refs from the EFL & WSL to increase the number of VAR's for when it goes beyond the EPL. The other thing that has been mentioned, is, SPECIFIC VAR, ie: ex players who take over from refs at Stockley Park, only thing is, gotta get IFAB to instigate it. So, couple of years time then.

VAR has been a total failure. It was probably only introduced to off-set TV replays showing wrong decisions.
Having replays on the big screen in the ground causes more problems than it solves.

I can see VAR being scrapped and reverting to pre-TV era technology.

the football authorities need to clamp down on 'repeat offences'.

Be it Raheem Sterling with stamping on people's feet or Jose Mourinho and all the time-wasting. Or John Terry for behaving like a cv.nt.

There should be a record, in the public domain, to declare zero tolerance of 'crime x' from 'Player/Manager Y'.

Players will work hard to not get a reputation for a diver, hacker, whatever. And like the points on the driving license, over time , you can clear your name.

As previously mentioned commentators, pundits and reporters should stop excusing Big Club players on the grounds of "frustration" when they kick someone up in the air. It may well be frustrating not to be winning their 10th game on the bounce but not as frustrating as losing it.
Likewise when they systematically commit fouls on the halfway line to break up counter attacks they don't "have to do it".
Also stop interviewing managers a few minutes after matches when they can't say what they really think and Graham Taylor's words about thanking the official for costing them their job could apply.
