If we're talking corners then worth repeating the stats I read on The Athletic the other day (prior to the Everton game).

At the time we apparently had faced 66 corners without conceding this season, the second most in the league behind Spurs with 67.

In total we had defended 88 corners in a row going back to April, again the second most in the league behind Spurs with 97.

So we might be rubbish taking them but we're great at keeping them out.

stats for you. So in 12 games this season we've not conceded from a corner. Whilst this is encouraging it was only back in late April we conceded 3 in the same game (v West Ham). Last season we looked very vulnerable from set pieces and repeatedly conceded - from 1st game (Arsenal) to the end (Fulham) with many in between.

If you look at goals scored from corners (as this is what the thread is about) we are usually in the bottom 3 or 4 teams, whilst teams like Brentford are near the top, despite not being an overly tall team. Arsenal also seem to get a few despite not being a tall team.
For a team who don't score many set pieces are a critical part of the game, yet we don't seem to focus much on it.

Eze is wasted taking corners. Should be on the edge of the box. Thought Hughes just as effective/ineffective taking them.

This is exactly what I said to a mate during the Everton game. Hughes generally takes a good corner kick. Ebs should, as you say be on the edge of the box, to pick up loose balls/rebounds.

it'll all be sorted once Olise is back in the team (and we'll start scoring from corners again).

I read a statistical analysis of corner kicks in the Premier League. It concluded that 20% of corners resulted in an attempt on goal and only 10% of those attempts were successful. Ergo 1 corner kick in 50 resulted in a goal. I'm sure there will have been a number of similar analyses so I'm not claiming that the one I read is definitive. Nevertheless it does emphasise what a blunt tool a corner kick actually is; yet fans perennially 'roar' when one is awarded to their team.

Good post. Many moons ago I played in an amateur side and took the corners. Remarkably I could kick the ball with either foot, a rare skill, and deliver the ball into the heart of the box. We never scored from one corner. Either the keeper comes and collects, or the defender is naturally placed to head away, or your team doesn't attack the ball etc. Scale that up relative to pro games and the result is the same.
I recall that Barcelona used to take short corners and keep possession.

I have a recollection equally remarkable, but it happens to be true. On 27th December 1958 we were at home to Aldershot. We had a corner at the Whitehorse end, and it was taken by Gerry Priestly, a not very good winger. To everyone's astonishment the ball floated into the net at the far post without anyone touching it. We won 4-1. I'd love someone else to say they were there. I still have the programme.

Heh. Actually, I wonder if there is a stat that gives the percentage of loss of possession and an immediate chance / goal at the other end?
