I said the same about swapping Ayew to the left further up this thread. It was a no brainer. I also said Lerma and Doucoure weren’t ready and that could be seen. I also don’t think Hughes works well with both of them playing. In truth most of our 11 were poor yesterday and Newcastle were on top form. I expect our starting 11 before injuries a few weeks back would have given them a much harder contest? It also didn’t help the fluke first goal and the less said about Edouard and Matteta the better :-( Agree - who would have thought an attacking RB might attack and double up on our LB? OE wasn't ready for it and we were caught out repeatedly. If one of the 3 CMs were meant to help out i couldn't see it. For 2nd goal when the ball was converted Hughes was the closest player to Gordon and Newcastle also had a free man. Any ideas where Ward was?

As mentioned previously suspect our season will largely pan out the same as last year but without the season interruption. Will gain enough points in the games against lower opposition, will have a few good results against higher teams like ManUre result, take a couple of pannings like Saturday, not much in the Cups, very little transfer activity of note mid season, finish 10th-15th. Could get shaky if we decide to sell in Jan and don't recruit or wisely, long term injuries but overall see a steady season ahead. Bright spark could be player/s breaking into the team COYP !! It wasn't one of our best performances but people just have to realise this Newcastle side are very good .They are as good as anyone at the moment and without our best eleven on the pitch we are going to struggle to contain them . They have recently put 8 past Sheffield utd , beat Man City and took PSG to the cleaners in the CL . What made anyone think a makeshift Palace team was going to get any joy out of them ? The second goal .The left sided attacker made a run across the box ,Ward his marker went with him leaving the space at the back post which was taken up by Gordon . Hughes jogging back let him get away ,he realised too late the situation developing and Gordon got the tap in

They are bang in form with a lot of strength in depth and very little injuries to key players. With such a decimated team we were always going to be on the backfoot. I listened to the whole game and thought in patches we did not play too bad considering but the defensive errors were poor. However this is not a game that will define our season.

Newcastle didn't even put out their strongest XI (although to be honest that is quite hard to pick given the strength of their squad). I did think Hughes was particularly poor after filling in admirably in Lerma's absence. He switched off multiple times, including during two of the goals. He also fluffed his lines going forward and his set-pieces were a bit floaty (stark contrast to Franca's whipped balls when he came on). Having said all that I like Hughes' spirit and aggression. Thankfully Roy did not try and gloss over what was a sh!t show and hopefully that'll feed a much improved performance on Friday.

So the result doesn’t make us that bad. Edited by Putitout (23 Oct 2023 5.03pm)

It was a disappointing performance and even more disappointing result, but in all honesty I think we'd have still lost there with our best 11. Not the end of the world. I think it will be much the same against Spurs. Weak team against an in form side. After the Spurs game we've got a run of 5 winnable games (Burnley, Everton, Luton, West Ham, Bournemouth) - I'd much rather have the likes Eze, Olise and Franca back for these matches.

That’s how we’ve always got to look at it, we know where the bulk of our points are coming from every season, so anyone who gets stressed over losing to the best sides in the division, especially one that hammered PSG, needs to give their head a wobble(as the saying goes)

Any ideas where Ward was? I was annoyed by our inability to respond to the overload of one side of the pitch. I thought Roy and Ray were known for their meticulous attention to detail on defensive set up and yet they failed to get us to adapt. If they wanted a clue about what the opposition were likely to do, all they had to do was watch previous Newcastle matches to see that this is a common Howe ploy and particularly down the opposition’s left hand side. Normally it would involve Almiron but Murphy was equally obliging. As much as I find Schlupp annoying in his play he would at least have provided more protection down that side. Oh, and I seem to recall that Ward was in the middle ‘helping out’ when Gordon slotted home. Edited by Eaglecoops (24 Oct 2023 2.55pm)

If Ward went with a runner it wasn't his man, hence the big gap. Hughes was playing slightly ahead of the other 2 CMs so not sure how it could have been his man
