Agreed, although I hope it turns out well with Franca. The one thing I thought at the time was how come the likes of Napoli, Roma, Sevilla, A Madrid , Porto et al didn't have a look? Perhaps they did, who knows. Perhaps we pulled off a major coup, but as you say, we can't go round risking £20 plus million here and there on an unknown quantity every transfer window.

Absolutely, don’t we all. If he is the next Vinicius Jnr then I’ll be happy to be watching.

Yes I am questioning the way we spent it. These are supposed to be the top people in their field who are looking at players to bring into the club, not some fans off the street. If I spent £48m and provided the same value for money return in my profession I wouldn’t be employed for long.

When you have as little money as us, paying £23m for a player who could potentially be a star is not going to cut it. That’s just a Chelsea style approach which we can’t afford.

I'm on the same page.

But this is sooo out of character for us. Surely he has to be the next best thing. I mean that is an insane amount of money for a kid with next to no experience.

I might be wrong, but I though Henderson and Franca both cost £15m each with fees rising to £20m and £23m, respectively, based on certain goals being met? If he can get fit Henderson is easily worth that money given clubs are paying more than that for youth goalkeepers with no PL experience. I don't think we needed him though, but he is a long-term investment. As to Franca it is useless speculating as he is very much an unknown quantity. In Brazil he was being talked about as something special but South American players don't always adapt. He does seem to have a big, happy personality though which I think will help him adapt and help fans warm to him. From brief glimpses I'm excited to see him get on the pitch.

And there is nothing at all wrong in questioning how what money the club does possess was used in the last window. What has to be taken into consideration is , the fact that a squad just about OK in numbers was about to lose three experienced mid fielders, one a loan, Wilf then had to be accounted for, and Olise,s injury was known to be serious. The Guita, situation was developing.
We all know Lerma was a great acquisition , but that alone doesn’t do it for the squad.
Franca, is a different issue , probably everyone just got unlucky with his condition, he could be another, Eze, Olise, type success, I hope he is. Many of us knew what we were getting with the two mentioned, Franca, remains a mystery, but looks decent in training, he could improve an already good first team , but the squad is lighter and the recent transfer dealings don’t appear to deal with that.

You and others are calling for funds beyond our regular income to be spent and questioning the way we have spent what we have. It’s always easy to criticise from the comfort of your armchair when every player you want is available at the price you can afford. Much more difficult to actually do it. We only know the deals we did. We don’t know any of the background reasoning nor any of the deals we tried to do, which failed.

No but I can compare us to clubs in a similar position, who all had better windows, I'll hold judgment on franca but if he turns out to be a flop then the window couldn't have been much worse. We again leave buisness till the last week, which pretty much screams desperation. And I'm curious what freedman has done which qualifies him being director of football, oh yeah a goal away at Stockport.
