In his first spell Alan Smith had a better win/loss percentage than Sir Steve or Terry Venables.

And he had no hair, but we didn’t care

Pity no one has mentioned Arthur Rowe. Admit it was some time ago but he bought a style of football called push and run. It was one touch football and plenty of movement. I was at the game when we won 9.0 against Accrington Stanley. Probably the start of total football. He did have a player who would walk into any Palace team, namely Johnny Byrne, which this style of football was ideal.

Fair play but before most people's time. No offence intended!

A legend indeed. A man before his time but probably better known for his work with a certain North London team if I recall.

Quite right doombar. Think he had to retire for health reasons.

What times they were. It was actually 9-2 v Accrington, in 60-61, and I missed it because we were on summer holiday. But the previous season, when Arthur was assistant manager, I saw 8-1 v Watford, and just a few weeks later 9-0 v Barrow. In the two seasons 1959-61 Byrne scored 46 goals.
