Interested to know who fellow supporters think have been our best centre backs (and pairings) over the years. McCormick/Blyth, Cannon/Gilbert, Young/Thorn, Andersen/Guehi and others.

I'm probably saying Jim and Billy, but concede that I'm a bit old and perhaps biased.

Jackson.. Wan Bissaka.... Sansom.. Nicholas.. Cannon.. Guehi.... Zaha... Thomas.. Byrne... Holton.. Rogers.. that should do it..

We've been well served with centre backs over the years.
I would add to the list the partnership of Dann and Delaney which was very solid.
As an individual, I also rated Craig Moore who was a footballing centre half with a teriffic spring despite not being the tallest.
I think Guehi and Anderson are the best footballers, McCormack and Blyth the most uncompromising, Dann and Delaney the most dominant and Cannon and Gilbert were very good all rounders.

For me Jim Cannon has been the best Palace CB I've seen since beginning to support the club in the early 70s. I hesitate to add Billy Gilbert to his name as a pairing as I don't think Gilbert was quite top division standard, though they were a solid partnership in the promotion year when we conceded just 24 goals in 42 games.

Ninja and Thorn were very different players but both excellent. Jim Cannon was good for years, even in a poor side at the end of his career. Gabbidon, Cahill, Dann, Delaney, Cahill, Tomlin's even Kelly and Hill - all have done well for us over the years. The last poor one I can remember is Ruddock but even he wasn't bad when he started.
I think Cannon maybe shades it with appearances and longevity. I couldn't pick between the others for second. Loads of decent ones over the years. I'm probably purposely forgetting some awful ones. Was Fan Zhiyi a centre back too? - I expected him to fail but he was decent too.

Good question I guess it is very difficult to compare players from different eras. All the pairings you mentioned were great but I guess the older ones would struggle in today’s style of play as would Marc and Joa in the past era. Jim Cannon was the favourite for me but they were all very effective.COYP

Jeff Hopkin & Leif Andersen? Not sure they played together luckily!

Sometimes I set out for Ludlow
Sometimes I end up in Chepstow
