It is rumoured that we were going for Conor Gallagher but it was Roy that said that he wanted Batshuayi instead

It looks a silly decision in hindsight but at the time, it's worth remembering that Batshuayi had just scored 5 goals in 11 games for us, having got 7 in 10 at Dortmund the year before, and everyone was clamouring for a striker (sounds familiar). Benteke was the only other out and out striker at the club at the start of that season.

Meanwhile, Gallagher did little in the year at West Brom and we'd just signed Eze. At the time, had Hodgson gone for Gallagher over Batshuayi, I think everyone would have been calling him crazy.

I’d be v happy if we had Batshuayi playing for us now rather than our current bunch of “strikers” (term used loosely). Sure he missed chances but he at least got on the end of crosses. Wilf I think rated him.

I was thinking that myself, pretty average, but far better than what we have.

I have a slightly different perspective on some of the issues raised especially Parish and Freedman.

When Harris and Blitzer first invested in Palace, they were the driving forces behind the purchase of Benteke who they were aware of as they had previously considered buying Villa. Hence, they pushed for his signing even though I recall Parish saying he would not personally have done a deal at the price paid. I suspect a similar situation may well have arisen vis a vis Sakko.

Parish is very well aware of how challenging it became for Palace to not only fund the transfers but also the wages involved and it took many years and a huge write off to get the pair off the books. Hence, my instincts on the so called "control" of Parish is that he is only too well aware of the size of Palace as a club, the historic risks - administration - of twice getting vastly over extended, and also the ongoing risks of Harris and Blitzer selling their interests in Palace given their interest in Chelsea, Man Utd etc.

So, my perspective is that Parish is having to manage a difficult boardroom situation with considerable care given he is the one who knows the risks involved.

As to Freedman, my understanding is that he has overall responsibility for transfers, contracts, scouting, managerial appts and quite possibly the Academy as well. Clearly he doesn't operate in a vacuum but in consultation with the coach, Parish and the rest of the Board but his remit is very wide ranging. So, for example, the point made about moving on Luka was actually a PV decision simply because they had been unable to bring in another midfielder last summer and he would have been left really short.

My take is that he is a very shrewd operator which is what Parish recognised in him when he was the Manager of Palace. I suspect he is the one who has led the focus on building from the Academy upwards, the appointment of Derry was his idea and probably also McCarthy. Equally, he appears to negotiate hard vis a vis fees and there is no suggestion of Palace overpaying as was the case vis a vis Benteke etc.

So, that's an alternative view. Most importantly, lets hope that Roy keeps Palace in the PL and everything can be further analysed in the summer. I am an optimist in that regard but am expecting a bumpy ride these next 10 games.

I keep thinking that Edouard will burst into life and perform with some aplomb.Perhaps if he scores this will be the springboard for further goals.Goals breed confidence and I suspect he is low on confidence at the present time.

He's lazy and not willing to make any of his own chances. I can't wait to just get rid

Well someone needs to start scoring. You would think that in these last ten games the quality of defences we are coming up against should overall be weaker than in the last ten. And we should be able to get the ball to the strikers more often. And I don’t think Roy’s approach to attacking will be any more negative to what we have been seeing.

The point that I was making was to do with whether or not the manager had any input into the signings and not questioning whether the decision was right or wrong

It was reported last year that there were issues with his workrate playing for Celtic but he did score 66 goals in 116 Scottish Premier League appearances.

I’m sure he’d score loads of goals in the English 3rd division which is just about the equivalent difference in standard between Rangers/Celtic and the rest of the SPL.

I have been disappointed by the lack of quality in his finishing but even more so by the lack of effort.

All clubs have different set ups and frankly Im pissed when people keep refering to other teams . Some have had a good year ,some got a jump on others (us) with the post Brexit rules with regard signing foriegn players (Brighton did particually well here) Remeber though folks , form is tempoary ,class is permanent

Good post by Neillo , we can only guess whats going on behind the scenes and its as good a guess as any . We can see whats going on on the pitch though and its not been good enough , thats the manager and the players , hopfully removing PV will focus the side in a better direction

They're reopening it now.

Also The Athletic wrote a great piece when PV was sacked – I do agree that the board structure is creating problems, along with the decision not to invest in Jan, but apparently Vieras support staff were not up to the required standard and this has been a big reason why he's failed. That plus the apparent tendency to lean on them more than he should to make key decisions, which in turn ended up being the wrong ones due to their inadequacy.

So he banged them in for Celtic in a weak league, and Scotland just beat Spain. It stands to reason that someone should explain this to him.
