I wonder if part of the reason we've abandoned this possession based style is Guaita's lack of ability with his feet? He used to touch the ball far, far more often last season but never looked comfortable. His shot stopping is good. I think it was really good a couple of years ago when he pulled off saves I didn't think possible. I'd say he's comfortably in the lower half of Prem goalkeepers. A very good and accurate summary. Almost every game there is a ball or balls that fly through the 6 yard box that he just watches or gets nowhere near to. I may be old school, but I remember when in the English game it was considered poor play to not catch the ball on every possible occasion and if not to punch or firmly push the ball well away from the goal or into touch. Modern gloves and lightweight balls that they ‘stick’ to more readily should help to catch the ball, but Guaita has a tendency to parry or flap at some balls each game that create goal-scoring opportunities for the opposition or lead to very nervous moments for his defenders. He is though a very good instinctive shot-stopper and has prevented many ‘certain’ goals.

We are now two thirds of the season in and curious how people would rate our squad so far. I'd go with.... Doucoure, already player of the season, by far our best player. Zaha, poor by his standards but by far our best attacking player. Good. Olise, Andersen, Guehi. Average. Mitchell, Clyne, Guaita. Below average. Ward, Eze, Schlupp, Ayew. Worthless. Mateta, Edouard. Hughes, Richards both solid when needed. The rest not enough minutes to rate. Agree on the whole. Both Olise and Guehi have improved since the WC break, previously i would say average based on their performances last year. Doucoure has been our best CM, however, as the bar is so low i think the jury is still out a little. Nateta and Edouard are massively lacking in confidence. The latter is a better player and finisher but his work rate is pony. For a bloke on about £90k a week that is a disgrace.
