Well its a bit off topic but should players be allowed to choose which country they play for ? For me its where your born and thats the end of it .

I do understand this stance but just from a subjective standpoint I disagree.

For instance, if I were to win the lottery and move to a luxury paradise in the Seychelles and my son became the greatest footballer of all time I'd want him to play for England of course.

Where it gets a bit more hazy is if you have players who's half uncle twice removed owned a dog from X country and they choose to play for them. Even then if that qualifies I'd be hard pressed to dictate which nation someone should represent.

The biggest problem I see there is typically footballers aren't the most intellectually gifted and often at an age when they are still discovering their oft' referenced today 'identities'. Ryan Giggs would be a prime example for me. I still don't believe today he considers himself Welsh and that was more a move out of spite in his personal circumstances.

Both my parents were Irish but I am English therefore that would be my nation. If Franco considers himself Irish I would be more than happy to see him throw on the Green. If it helps him in Red and Blue one day all the better!!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Can he play football, can he score goals that’s all I’m really interested in knowing. If he can, get him in the side because our forwards can’t.

From memory, when he was born, birth in Ireland gave Irish Citizenship. Now no longer the case. Another example is that birth in Yorkshire is no longer required for selection for the Yorkshire Cricket Team.

Franco has played for the Irish under 17 and nineteen national sides so it looks like he's happy to play for Ireland even if he has Nigerian roots

I think it goes back to grandparents with current rules as to which country you can represent
Which means there could be 4 to chose from . If your parents were not born in the same country as their parents that would be another 2 and if you were born in another that would make 7 . However if one of your parents is from the UK and you were born overseas you would be a dual national which means you can chose any of the home nations which would be another 4 .

I dont think thats likely to come up but yep thats 11 countries to choose from , confusing or what

Chris Armstrong was born in England, grew up in Wales and had Irish & Nigerian parents. According to Wiki his Tottenham contract meant he could only play for England even though the other three were all interested.
