Certainly a great deal of water has passed under the bridge since that game and the years have dimmed my memory bank. I was always on coach 2, The late big Dave Illingworth, Charlie, Neil the photographer, and my mates, simple times Goodness me, I wasn't aware that he had passed away. In bygone days I used to have many a chinwag with big 'Illy' and was on the same coach as him on the way to Shrewsbury. It started to snow as we approached Birmingham and the game was cancelled so we turned back ! I believe there was mention of diverting to a game at Coventry but the insurance cover prevented us from doing so. I have a feeling that 'Illy' used to be a programme collector.

where you not on the Terraces with the chaps I don't recall any terraces at 'Highfield Road' which was the first all-seater stadium in England.

I recall the terraces at Burnden Park. Uncovered. Bolton’s old ground. I was feeling so rough I had to lie down. Blizzard blowing. Can’t even remember th score. Never saw second half think we drew 1-1. Mid nineties.

Yes, were right on the far left, i think all 250 of us, standing shivering, to the sound of "your gonna get your f*****g head kicked in" by the Bolton fans.

Also the next day, brief highlights were shown on 'The Big Match' and pundit Jimmy Hill - aka Coventry City chairman - smugly summed it up by saying "bad luck, Palace; but these things do tend to even themselves out over the course of a season". It's funny, but I'm still waiting!! Yes, the same Jimmy Hill who concluded that the scything down of Geoff Thomas in the penalty area in the 1990 FA Cup Final replay couldn't possibly be given as a penalty, because Thomas was heading away from the goal and out of the area at the time of the foul. A free kick outside the area was therefore the correct decision. I'm still waiting for that one to even itself out too!!
Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes) |

I was there that day. There were only 4 people in the ground who said it didn't go in -the ref, 2 linesmen and Jimmy Hill.
