Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!!

We will no doubt be investigated and fined, it was unbelievably bad.

Many, many moons ago in the early to mid 90s I worked as a steward at Palace. I was about 15, but told them I was old enough (that's how strict it all was!).

One of the things they did tell us was not to chase any lone pitch invaders during play. The idea was that they were attention seekers, and if you chase them, they run away, you keep chasing etc and they get maximum attention, which is what they want. Then the next one is more likely to do it, and so on. We were told to just let them do their daft thing without interacting with them and they would just walk over to the side of the pitch sooner than later, then you can escort them out.

Whether that school of thought has changed over time I don't know, but I feel certain about two things. Firstly, the stewards will mostly be low wage temps, not trained professionals. Secondly, you would need an army to prevent someone getting on the pitch if they are determined to.
