I remember the dankness in the chill December air and the floodlights. I was a little bit in awe that for some reason it was being televised in Sweden. And the Brian Moore commentary "and Rogers goes round the keeper. Could it be five? It IS Five!!" Don Rogers proving in that one moment that he was, and always would be, a better footballer than Pele who, as mentioned in an earlier post, tried the same thing and missed an open goal.
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

I was in awe of 'The Don' having been lucky enough to be at Wembley to see him and 3rd Division Swindon Town beat Arsenal in the 1969 League Cup Final. I therefore couldn't believe it when we signed him as I thought we were on the verge of the "big time". Look how shiny and white his strip was throughout the game - a measure of his poise and balance and the inability of the opposition to get anywhere near him. I was so shocked (even though it made perfect sense) to read that he played football despite suffering from a skeletal defect that meant he shied away from the more physical aspects of the game. Imagine what a player he could have been otherwise. Such an incredible presence at Selhurst Park, it's sobering to recall that he only played 70 times for us in a two year period.

50 years ago! I remember it like it was yesterday. Glow after the game lasted a couple of weeks.

Younger people must get a bit bored of hearing about Don Rogers but he really was great. I remember some vague muttering in his first game at Selhurst against Everton when he hadn't done much then latched onto a ball, I think from John Craven, just inside their half and scored in an instant.

A great day, I was there. It was shown in Sweden, They had heard of the 'great' man ure and to see Palace beat them 5 - 0, many became Palace fans. We went on quite a few pre season trips to Scandinavia after that.

Imagine how great it would be if England were still in the World Cup on the anniversary, would mean only 48 hours to go the final on the 18th!

I was there as a nipper standing on my wooden box just below the floodlights in the Holmesdale.

My first game - was a 7 year old man u fan. Changed to Palace about two weeks later. No regrets. We beat Leicester 3 0 on the same date 5 years ago - which may be our second best ever performance.
